Release Info:
This originally unnamed 4-track EP was released in vinyl format in 1990 and is Heather's first release ever. People call it the "Heather Frith EP" or the "These Walls EP", because she used her name "Heather Frith" for it, whereas all of her other albums and singles were released later under the name "Heather Nova", and the first song is called "These Walls". In 1997, this record was re-released in compact disc format as "Heather Nova - The First Recording". The vinyl edition is very rare, the compact disc edition rare. THESE WALLS

General Info:
Only available on this record. Written by Heather Nova. Background vocals by Moira Lambert.

Introduction:
A simple song about liberating a loved one from their own sheltered life, These Walls features intensive parallelism in its lyrics. With its medieval imagery and themes of emancipation, this is almost the classic tale of a knight-in-shining-armor rescuing a princess, but with the genders reversed.

Music:
Like most The First Recording songs, the instrumentation here is relatively simple. A quick, constant beat gives the song a sense of life and momentum as well as serving to represent a heart beat, symbolizing the trapped life of the subject of the song.

Sample Lyrics:
In your dreams, you've seen castles
In your dreams, you've been kings and queens
You've ridden white horses past these walls
Your body is

NEW LOVE

General Info:
Apart from this EP release, a live version can be found on the "Live From The Union Chapel" DVD (2004). Written by Heather Nova.

Introduction:
Heather describes the difficulty of getting over an ex-partner by describing how everyday scenes evoke memories of the past relationship and a corresponding sense of loneliness and need for companionship. New Love is one of Heather's most melancholy songs.

Music:
A simple picked guitar, along with some synthesized sounds, provides this song with a somewhat ethereal atmosphere. A variable lyrical tempo evokes feelings of sadness and unease.

Sample Lyrics:
And everything reminds me of you
And everything reminds me of things we used to do
And even though I miss you, I know we're through
And I need to find something new

FURTHER THAN YOU

General Info:
Only available on this record. Written by Heather Nova.

Introduction:
A modest and structured song of love, Further Than You delivers a simple and sweet message somewhat reminiscent of All The Way. Heather's characteristic star/space imagery makes its first appearance here.

Music:
Heather uses only an acoustic guitar to accompany this relatively simple melody, which befits this simple song. A rare section of a cappella is used to call attention to the climactic lyrics in the break.

Sample Lyrics:
Oh, on a day like this, you can see forever, but that's okay
Cause I like this wide open view
But I'm not looking further than you

FLYING AS SHE FALLS

General Info:
Only available on this record. Written by Heather Nova.

Introduction:
Flying As She Falls is a character portrait that uses seasonal nature imagery as a metaphorical comparison to a woman trying to deal with an ended relationship. This is the only song Heather Nova has written in the third person.

Music:
This song is essentially a traditional folk ballad in both structure and instrumentation. A lone guitar, sometimes picked, sometimes strummed, accompanies in typical folk fashion.

Sample Lyrics:
The leaves have turned and she has not
And she tells me she can't let him go
And she looks to the moon for answers
And she looks inside and she knows
