Round one, match five:

We have The Good Ship Moon vs. Turn The Compass Round. Which do you prefer?

Please both vote in the poll and make a post about which song you like. If there is a tie in the poll, then the posts will be used as a tiebreaker.

Voting will last approximately 7 days.

You may consider any live or studio version when deciding.

Please vote carefully. Make sure you have selected the correct song before you submit your vote. Only votes will be counted, not intentions.

Absolutely Moon for sure

TTCR i always skip when playing the album; to me the opening vocals on the track truly spoil it (the pitch is way too severe on the ears) - in fact, i was gutted she Heather chose to play that in London instead of Until the Race is Run...

Incidentally, for the first round of the tournament, who decides what songs are paired against each other??

I do.

I explain a little about my methods here:
http://www.heathernova.net/modules/ne ... id=135224#forumpost135224

From a fairness perspective (getting the most popular songs into the quarterfinals), the best outcome would be 8 blowouts. That generally never happens, of course, cause there are gonna be some close matches somewhere in the first round. And I've also tried to make a few interesting matchups, like this one, pitting the two songs involving Heather's childhood against each other.

I've done random first-round pairings in the past, but I didn't think that'd work well for this tournament.

I really liked the acoustic version of turn The Compass Round, in 2010. I could have voted for the songs quite farin the tournament.

But I'm highly disappointed of the album version (and silly synths). ALl the beauty of the song has gone.

I like Moon. This songs has my vote.

I'm sure you know this, but just as a reminder, you may vote for a song based on its live performances. Of course, if you don't like the way a song is arranged on the album, you can consider that as well.

Speaking for myself, I actually liked Turn The Compass Round much more after I heard the album version. The song doesn't work as well for me acoustically.

And while do like Compass, I do not like it as much as The Good Ship Moon, so although we disagree on the details, it looks like we agree on our choice for this match.

Not convinced by as in "I just don't like the song" or do you mean you feel there is something insincere about it?

No, my english is not very good. I find this song is a bit disappointing. It lacks something, perhaps a spark. It makes me think to a beautiful cake with a bland taste.

I understand what you mean. I like the song, but I agree it lacks a bit of punch that might have taken it to the top echelon of Heather's songs. Oddly, I'd say the whole album kinda feels that way, but I do like the song and the album as a whole.

Still, Moon has some great moments - a great use of a pause, incredible, heartfelt vocals, and a beautiful melody. Definitely captivating.

Voted for TTCR - I'm all about Heather plus full band sound these days. I love her acoustic work but it was a case of acoustic overload for me with the album prior to the new one.

I actually like them both very much. I like Moon more because of the emotion and the subject matter, but I will vote for Compass so the song doesn't feel lonely and unappreciated.

Be careful. This sort of voting can lead to people holding back their votes till the end in hopes that their song won't look too popular. Plus, at two votes difference, this poll looks like it could still go either way.

And, as a reminder, the lower total songs will be paired up against the higher ones. So the closer the vote, the more likely it'll get paired up with a song that won big this round. Just a reminder.

(Nothing wrong with voting for Compass, of course - I'm just recommending you always vote for the song you do prefer.)

Final Results:
The Good Ship Moon - 8 - 57%
Turn The Compass Round - 6 - 43%

The Good Ship Moon holds its course, sailing into the quarterfinals just past Turn The Compass Round which indeed will get its wish, assuming "home" is somewhere other than the rest of this tournament.

I tend to do that, but not for purposes of strategy. A cautionary tale about late voting:

Whether HNN was down or just not reachable from some areas, I couldn't get through to the forum the night before Round 1-3 ended and wound up voting too late.

My own ISP was down most of the weekend and the entire night before this round ended; it came back online at 7:01 EST(!). My vote wouldn't have changed either of these outcomes, but I'm going to try not to wait until the last minute again.

I hear ya. If the site is down for a very long time, I'll probably extend the vote, but so far it's come back up within a day each time it's been down.
