Last.fm is a personalised radio station. You type in your favorite artist, in your case "Heather Nova", and the radio station plays Heather songs, and even more important, songs from similar artists. You can decide at each song if you like it or not. The radio station learns based your decisions, and after a time, it can suggest you the songs you may like even better. For example, I clicked each male singer away, and it rarely suggests any male artists to me anymore.

Today, I have listened to lots of new music. I have noticed that I like artists I have never heard of so far. It's a way to learn new music, probably to find even friends who have a similar music taste, as everyone can see what you listened to, and you can see what other people listened to...

It's funny as well, I started with "Lisa Germano", and the 29th suggested song was finally a song from Heather.

As you clicked all male singers away, I guess you'll find now only men as friends!

For example, I have currently a radio station with artists "similar to Kate Bush", and the last songs had been:

Björk - Joga (Buzz Water Mix)
Kate Bush – Joanni
Blondie – Dreaming (Utah Saints mix)
10,000 Maniacs – Like the Weather
Tracy Chapman – America (Album Version)
Sheryl Crow – What Can I Do For You
Jewel – Grey Matter (Live 2001)
Natalie Imbruglia – On the Run
Laurie Anderson – On The Way To Jerusalem (Live)
The Sugarcubes – Motorcrash
Cyndi Lauper – Hey Now (Girls Just Want to Have Fun)
The Cranberries – I Will Always

(plus some males, I have skipped those)

Listening to webradio, I prefer Musicovery.com. It's quite handy: you define your current 'mood', select a genre if you will, wether it should allow hits or only non-hits, time-period, and you are set. It's really a 'web', since all songs are connected and you can freely skip between them. I found it to be very useful .

Btw, what's with the discrimination of male artists?

based upon your listening profile (also feeding from your computer when you use music player like iTunes/Mediaplayer on your laptop/desktop - the desktop tool feeds the titles to your profile) it creates a list of your music-neighboors.

it then creates a list of recommended music (that you can listen in the streaming 'radio' station, either on webpage, or in dekstop tool). When you are a paid member (E2,50 per month) you can listen a few more stations, like "loved songs" - the songs that you indicated before that you "love" them.

also, you can indicate to which concerts you go, and you can see who is going there too. etc etc etc.

my profile id is labrang

It made me curious - maybe I'll try it if I find the time.
It would be interesting which songs/bands/artists they suggest.

Yeah, it's nice. It's a bit like the feature on amazon "people who have bought this record have also bought...". Similar with last.fm. "People who have listened to Heather Nova have also listened to"...

It seems to be a good way to find new friends as well, as after a while, you get informed which people have a similar music taste than you, that is, which people have listened in the last week to almost the same songs as you. And then you can listen to some of their other songs, which you might enjoy as well.

Of course, many suggestions are not surprising. When I type in "Kristin Hersh", one of the first suggestions is often "Throwing Muses", for example. Also, when you type in "Heather Nova", you are suggested to listen to people like Tori Amos or PJ Harvey as well. But it is not the same order each time, there is a random function build in.

That's what I have listened to these days: http://www.last.fm/user/germanofan/

also, you get to know artists in your range that you have never heard of.

Sarah Slean is one of them, i got to know this way.

And I noticed you get informed about concert dates from the people you listen to. It can happen that you listen to some music you have never heard before, and you like it, and then you read the artist plays in Frankfurt (for example) next week. So you might consider now to go to this concert, and you can see that maybe five members of last.fm plan to go to this concert as well.

Now it's only high... surely not my fault, as I listened to pretty much the same music as the last days already...

I noticed there is also "super" for best compatibility...!

I don't know if I will have much time to listen to last.fm in the next days, as I bought an album last week, today I got another album, then today or tomorrow three other albums will arrive, and two more albums are already ordered... Currently, I'm in the listening-to-new-artists-with-wanting-to-spend-lots-of-money-for-them-mood.

I like Pure Fm on the radio. I like to listen to it at work.

I don't know if it's a French or Wallon station, but the reception is quite good in Antwerp.

And it's a good way to improve my French ! That may always come in handy.
