I can't remember if there is a thread for her, but there should be. She's hugely talented (Even moreso live - I saw her last july.) and very witty and unique. And more recently, her fanbase has vastly increased through magazines and word of mouth.

If you like that kind of Nellie Mckay "Is she very intelligent or very crazy?" feel, then you'll love her.

And if you like more traditional singer songwriters (whos primary instrument is piano), then you'll enjoy her last album a lot, "Begin To Hope" which came out a few months ago. Especially songs like "Samson".

Here are the videos of the songs from the new album :

Regina Spektor - Samson

Regina Spektor - Fidelity

Regina Spektor - On The Radio

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to mention this girl. I bought an early album of hers the other week, intrigued by the artwork and the song titles. The guy behind the counter at the record shop was impressed.
I've been too busy with the Anna Terheim CDs to listen to it much so far and I think it's the kind of music that requires a little effort on my part. Which is no bad thing at all.
Suitably reminded, I'll go listen to it...

You should most certainly listen to the album straight away with your full attention.

And then see her live whenever you can, she is fantastic.

A few months ago I saw her videoclip on tv, and I bought the cd a few weeks later.

She reminds me a LOT to Tori Amos.

Wooo! I think she's more playful than Tori tho, and obviously less political.. But sooo talented! So funny!

I bought her two albums yesterday (Soviet Kitsch and Begin To Hope), and they are both brilliant!

Whoa: there's a dramatic turnaround from your first comment, Bernd!
As I said... takes a little time to adjust to her sound. At Uni, in my first year, I studied the history of music, which included listening to many 'difficult' pieces, partly as coursework and partly because I had access to this huge and wonderful record library... it was probably there that I learned that difficult stuff rewards one's extra effort a thousandfold, not only because 'difficult' expands one's horizons, but also because the most sophisticated music takes initial effort and sophisticated music is the kind that makes life richer as opposed to merely more pleasant.

Perhaps Heather will make an album of songs all in 9/8 time accompanied only by sackbutts and prepared piano?

I know. Well, I listened closer to her records in the meanwhile.

I don't think her music is hard to listen to tho, it's quite catchy.. She rocks.

Naw, it's not really *difficult* in the sense I was talking about (I was taking liberties so as to venture a general opinion ) but like, say, Joanna Newsom or Kate Bush, she has a slightly unusual vocal delivery and a quirky way with lyrical ideas... It depends what you're familiar with, of course.
