I hope I get some people who attend this. I've decided I'll hold a Heather Nova Discord meetup January 1, 2021, 10:00 - 12:00 EST open to anyone on here.

During this time, we can talk and/or video chat, share some music randomly, and there are some games we can consider to pass the time too. Jigsaws work well with talking but not letting the conversations drone on and possibly still keeping people engaged.

Basic level escape rooms and Yahtzee can be done for group settings.

Most activities would be easier to do on a desktop or laptop, and possibly iPad would be okay.

What time GMT ?

In case he means 10am-noon, it is 4pm-6pm in France/Germany. In case he means 10pm-midnight, well... But maybe he means 10am-midnight?

Is Discord with webcam? I have actually no clue what "Discord" is.

Discord can be used as a website in a browser or an app on a mobile phone or Windows 10. No additional installation is required for a computer, but you should register for a free nick name.

It is a communication app/website that has the option for audio or video. It also allows for screen sharing. I do not have a paid zoom account, and I'm too cheap to pay for one. If someone has one, it is a mode we could consider and doing an interactive fiction game (i.e. Myst, Botanicula, Samsorost) with potential remote control privileges is a potential group activity option as well.

I use Discord extensively. It's been my primary communication app for several years. Just saw this today though, didn't know about the meetup until now.

I had to invite people to the server apparently.

Also, we figured out that Firefox doesn't load video, and that Edge and Chrome do work with video.

Discord is nice in that it has a lot of functionality for free, but it is hard for some people to understand. So, there is a poll to consider other options now, or maybe we could even consider something like Zoom for 1- a few meetups and then Discord afterward to get more people at least acquainted with each other.

Yes, I'm aware that firefox won't do video or screenshare on discord, but I absolutely never do video so that only comes up with screensharing videos or games like jackbox. But like I said, I use Discord all the time.

Usually this forum is pretty quiet so I don't check it every day so I didn't know about the gathering. Usually i used discord for chat though and some voice chat parties. If y'all were looking to do video chat that's cool but I won't be participating. Discord only added video chat earlier this year and it was pretty disappointing cause it has been a nice refuge from it but thankfully a lot of existing discord servers have a strong chat or vc culture.

Hi Cass, I didn't do video (because I used Firefox) and that was not a problem. So it was only voice chatting for me.

I don't mide video chatting, though, so I would be ok to share my screen next time, but if you don't want to, nevermind.

In my union, we used jitsi this year. It worked well. Does anyone know it ?

I do not personally know Jitsi.

I have used Jitsi occasionally - also as a host. It worked alright.

Can't say I have used the majority, but certainly a fair share over the last 10 months since I have been exclusively working from home and conferencing in a plethora of settings, professionally or else.

Interestingly Pexip is not mentioned. It is used here by parliament.
