The Coventry Carol
Mein Tannenbaum
the Mediaeval Baebes have a good Christmas album
There is no Rose (which I *think* is a Christmas carol of sorts)
carols by William Warlock
a medley which starts with Sleigh Bells by Mantovani and his Orchestra

modern Christmas songs I associate with hectic Christmas shopping and awkward Christmas discos... either that or they're simply schmaltzy crap. Truly awful guff

Ah, so this is indeed a common English word. I wanted to write it in my article about "Volkstümliche Musik" in the other thread a few minutes ago, but I didn't expect anyone could understand it, except Germans.

It's taken me a long time to enjoy Scottish folk music... I think the folk music of one's own country is difficult to disassociate from a sense of being 'dragged back home' something that every bit of rock'n'roll from 1958 onwards has strenuously countered... and that's often our formative experience in *choosing* music that we listen to and, at the same time, the choice of our forming adult identities, so it's a very strong thing. However, as Swiss folk has always been 'exotic' to me, it hasn't suffered this problem. As for the Scottish stuff, I've recently returned to some of it, as I said and it, too, can be extraordinary. Especially the a capella stuff originating in the Western Isles.

Your opinion...

yes, it is my opinion that if you pick a song that refers to a rape that happened during the holiday season as your 'favorite Christmas song', you must be a very sick person.

My opinion:

a) Well, in the song "Blue Black", there is mentioned the rape (as "sin supreme"), but also the "Christmas kitchen". In my opinion, it is this contrast that makes the lyrics here so interesting. There are many other contrasts in this song as well: blue vs. black, words vs. heart, my memory vs. your loss, I never felt so clean vs. you did the sin supreme. I think Bene just wanted to point that out. Call it "irony".

b) Not everyone celebrates Christmas with trees and presents and whatever. That's why there are so many action movies on tv on Christmas here, some people just want to have a contrast program to the usual Christmas program. Are they all sick? For example, the biggest German tv station has shown the movie "Pearl Harbor" last week, at Christmas day. A movie about war, with lots of dead people. Wrong?

c) Heather has put "Blue Black" on Oyster. If she had wanted other people not to listen to, she wouldn't have put it on Oyster.

Just wonder what is typical for a Christmas song. In lot's of songs you hear of snow, a white christmas and so. In Brazil it was like 35 degrees Celsius at the Copacabana Beach this Christmas. At Bermuda it was about 22 degrees Celsius. I doubt anybody connect snow with Christmas time in those countries.

I very much agree with you.

How would you define a Christmas song?

To me the word Christmas even don't need to be in the lyrics.
How about "Higher Ground" as a kind of Christmas song? Thinking of people you love and telling them is the message is what a christmas song should be about. Well call it a love song.

My try:

A song that is about Christmas ("White Christmas" or many religious songs like "Silent Night") or a song that has not much to do with Christmas itself, but is still typically played at Christmas ("Jingle Bells").

I like "Jul, jul strċlande jul" the most when it's not butchered by singers. A lot of singers like to try and pay with the songs, do stuff with their voices which I dislike a lot. Simplicity is the best.

No, I do not hope so.

I like the song because it doesn't fit into this "christmas-clean love" (as Pearl Jam called it once) image.
When Heather wrote the line about the Christmas kitchen, she knew exactly what she did and if she published it, you cannot blame me for that. If she connects rape with Christmas, you have to blame her.
And I guess she wrote it, because she wanted to show that Christmas isnt just "bells ringing, angels singing, snow falling and Santa the presents he's bringing). There may exist
many people that feel sad or lonely during Christmas, and there's a lot of violence and quarrel in these days especially in families as well.

If Heather leads our attention to that, it just shows that she's a great artist in my opinion.

Of course it is dicussable if this is a Christmas song or not, but nevertheless the events stated take place during Christmas.

true, there's domestic violence and abuse during the holiday season and Heather wrote about that. But if this song represents "Christmas" for you, you must be a very troubled person anyway.

I think her mentioning Cristmas is just a detail, really...

Where, exactly, did Bene say that Blue Black "represents Christmas"? He just said it was his favorite song involving Christmas. Now, I'm not sure how important "Christmas kitchen" is to the song, but it certainly is a great song. And its choice certainly provoked the most discussion, so it seems like a good choice. I myself seem to not be able to stand most Christmas music... this season, I kept wanting to leave stores that were playing it.. it just grated on my nerves. But all stores play it all the time from November (even October!) through December pretty much... ugh.

But I think I'd lean more toward Julie's idea that "Christmas kitchen" is just a detail. Heather Nova often seems to put in details that aren't necessarily understandable in the song seemingly in order to ground the song in a specific time and place. To kind of verify that the song is real. Also, she tends to sing the part of those who are traumatized, and I think latching onto the details is related to this.

But I do think Christmas is intended to fit in with the other details in the song to show that the guy in question broke boundaries, i.e. similar to the part about her sister. And I think it fits into a series of contrasts in the song. But I don't think it's a hugely important detail to the song that it happened during Christmas... though perhaps its also tying into the family theme (cf sister) since Christmas is a time for families to get together. Also reminds me of some family stuff in Sugar.
