I only know the previous version filmed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (I love his films). Perhaps I will watch this film after it' ll be available on DVD, just to see the difference.

![]() The new movie is - of course - much different to Fassbinder's. But another interesting interpretation of the novel.

Well, I must admit that some years ago one of my friends, who grew up in the German Democratic Republic, suggested me to watch a certain Fassbinder-Film (we discussed about social injustice at that time) and I checked up if I could borrow this film from our public library - and I could, fortunately. They had many Fassbinder-films and after having watched this film I started to admire him and I had to watch all the other films, too (which I could borrow there). But I still haven’ t watched all of his films and unfortunately his films are rarely telecasted. In my opinion he was a genius. He was very sensitive in personating his roles/ characters and chose really perfect actors who figured these parts really fantastic. His social criticism always fitted to my political attitude. ![]() Sorry for being offtopic. ![]()

It is a thread on movies, so this is certainly not off-topic.
![]() I saw my first Fassbinder movie on TV late at around midnight in the mid-90ies. I had my first own TV - my parent's old one, it didn't function very well anymore, but it was ok when you hit it - and I was so eager to use it, I always watched as long as I could. It was "Martha" - and I liked it from the beginning, I then started to get as lot of information as I could get about the director and his movies, of course. Funnily, "Martha" takes place in Konstanz, the city I live now...

@Bene:
Well, I associated the word "recently" with "new". Perhaps I was wrong. Just a quick feedback (because these are german titles and I don' t want to bore all engish speaking members here): I loved the films "Mutter Küsters Fahrt zum Himmel", "Katzelmacher" and "Angst essen Seele auf" most of all and I unfortunely haven' t seen the film "Martha" yet, if I remember well. But I hope one day I will be able to see it (on tv?).

I love that idea of discovering new things via a cracked-up old TV set! I think one of the reasons things from that sort of age stick with us is because, having limited resources at our disposals, the things we do have and like are more precious. I now have thousands of CDs but still two or three of the first cassette tapes I bought or recorded off the radio are amongst my favourites.

"Mozart and the whale" for the second time. So much recognition, it moves me and it made me cry...
If anyone doesn't know much about Asperger's syndrome, you should see this movie. It's about two (real) people with Asperger who find each other. The book was even better. (of course, ha!)

Latest movie I saw; Parlez-moi de la pluit (Let it Rain in English). Incredibly boring.

Debora, I totally understand! This is a great place to be for socializing and talking to say the least!
I saw Bowling for Columbine just about 1.5 hours ago. Some things are somewhat overexaggerated, but there are many great points of view of Michael Moore put out there. It's actually nice to see a documentary like this and 9/11 do well even if you don't agree with him because usually many documentaries don't seem to get mainstream. They just get put on PBS.

Finished watching the first season of BSG and I really enjoyed it. A very surprising ending!
So far, I'm 3 episodes into season 2, which is very action-packed and non-stop.

Well I spotted a magazine about 30 minutes ago which seemed to be entirely devoted to BSG.
I'm off to watch a DVD called 'Elegy'. It got a good review in the 'new releases' section of the free newspaper this morning so I picked it up on the way home.

Kenny Starfighter. It's a Swedish scifi movie, which turned out to be hilarious.

I finished watching the entire Battlestar Galactica series. I'm not sure I'd now recommend watching past the first season. I feel a bit betrayed by the show.

I watched Slumdog Millionaire this past weekend and really enjoyed it. I also watched the movie Taken and, while I thought the plot was good, I found the action scenes to be a little over the top.

Agreed. Avatar was amazing. Much, much better than I expected. It felt like traveling to the future to see how movies will look years from now. Must be seen in 3D, yes.

Last weekend at the IFFR in Rotterdam :
- a session of short movies. kind of eerie/dark ones - Red White & Blue - starts out as a slow paced alternative drama, and if you have a feeling for that kind of movie you know it just cannot end well.... - Russian Lessons, a documentary from Russian Andrei Nekrasov and his late wife, about the war between Russia and Georgia in 2008. How the media has been fooled and been fooling us. Probably will try to catch a few more movies coming weekend.

I liked The Boiler Room. Seth Green is impeccable, and Hally Berry is great too! Oh yeah, that guy in XXX is in that movie too, whatever his name is.

I've seen lots of movies for various reasons, but here's what I've seen in theaters:
Avatar (again): I liked it even better the second time. The Princess And The Frog - Enjoyed it, surprisingly. The Lovely Bones - It was ok, but I was disappointed given the writers/directors. Alice In Wonderland - Awful. Truly awful. I only expected it to be ok, and it was far more terrible than I imagined. On DVD, I saw lots of horror and Disney princes movies based on a project Frai was doing. In general, the Disney movies were much better than the horror movies.

@Anke: I will go next year again.
Recently saw "A single man" in the arthouse cinema in Den Haag. It was one of the movies I wanted to see at the IFFR in Rotterdam, but all screenings were booked out for the online quotum, so we had to miss that one at that time. It was great, especially the photography and the combination of time related styling. Furniture, house, dressing etc. Great sense of detailing. The acting was good too. Julianne Moore is getting old... ![]() Didn't see much noteworthy for the rest recently. Some old John leCarre spymovies from the 60s. Watching Lost at the moment at home, so that is how we fill the evenings :P
