She by Pauline O’Connor:
During the seventeen and eighteen hundreds, for her weatherliness and speed she became known. First favoured by France and then the Royal Navy, Who built twelve in Bermuda alone. America loved her for coastal defence, And she was the favourite of Pirates and Privateers. In flat seas and fair weather she’d out sail them all, Setting a legend passed down through the years. Soon, Bermudians built a remarkable version, sheer radical proportions had she. Alluring and graceful, yet skillfully mastered, Enabled Bermudians noted respect, when sailing the Atlantic seas. Though the elm was preferred to construct her. Bermuda Cedar feared better in salt. But, the tree was to scarce and far to expensive, Yet, ship building never came to a halt. They continued to build her superbly, And she indeed got better with time. She had hulls made of Bermuda Cedar, And her firm decks were made out of pine. The Royal Navy did not favour the Cedar, To be used above the line of the water. For should a cannon ball hit she would splinter, When fired upon as her enemies fought her. With the failures of the plantations, the economy would soon be destroyed. So they turned to the sea for survival. And the slaves of the land were deployed. Due to economic and political necessities, the slaves became apprentices to mariners. An order was passed in sixteen sixty one Which would in time break down colour barriers. An order of Council in seventeen eleven for the forty foot keel and above, stated of the white race only six were allowed, But the limit for slave crews was none. In time slave owners from Charlestown and South Carolina, Were amazed by the skills of blacks, They sent slave masters here to Bermuda, To learn how they developed such tact. Subsequently, the visits were disallowed, This practice stopped, and the law prevailed. Difficult indeed to emulate these skills. They were embedded in each generation of males. The success of the negro Bermudian, raised high prices when bought or sold. Compared to a slave of Jamaica, A Bermudian slaves price fetched eight fold. Bermudian slaves seized the opportunity, To become accomplished mariners indeed. some tried to escape in little small boats many tragically failed while others found ways to succeed. Shipwrights, mariners, sail makers, and pilots achieving the pride of determination. In buying their freedom or having it bought, Forty four years prior to emancipation. In seventeen ninety five Rear Admiral Murray arranged for Bermuda Government to buy out. The freedom of ones who they chose to become very important Kings Pilots. So history tells of the men and the sloop, And how she made Bermudian mariners glean, Men like Jacob Pitcairn, James Darrell, James Athill, and also Mr. Tom Bean.

I know this song from "Manfred Mann'S Earth Band". I think I never heard the Bob Marley Version. ooh, wait, I think I saw Bob Marley live in concert, plenty of years ago. Can't remember so if he played that song.
edit: It was on June 8th, 1980 in Kaiserslautern. The setlists are incomplete in the internet. Still don't know now if I heard this song. Main act was Fleetwood Mac at this open air.

From the interview in bermudasun.bm (see news):
Q: What’s next for you? A: I am just putting out a CD for the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, which has two exclusive new songs on it. The main song is one I wrote especially for the foundation. It hopefully conjures up the spirit of our unique relationship to the sea here in Bermuda. Being such a small island we have been sailors for generations but many people have forgotten this and have lost touch with it. The Bermuda Sloop Foundation is building a sail training vessel that will give our youth an opportunity to experience teamwork in the form of going to sea. What I love about the programme is that it will reach every kid — not just the affluent ones, and will be great at breaking down the barriers that exist here racially and socially. I am very excited about the project and wanted to do something for them. All proceeds will of course go to the foundation and the CDS will be available before Christmas.

theroyalgazette.com has more information:
Heather Nova offers song to help raise funds for the BermudaSloop By Ruth O’Kelly-Lynch Bermuda born international singing sensation Heather Nova has lent her voice to help the Bermuda Sloop Foundation. Ms Nova wrote and recorded a special song for the foundation to help them raise funds. The song is titled Together As One and appears on a special CD which has been released for the foundation. Also on the CD is a song written by Ms Nova’s father, John Frith, and a song from 2003 album “Storm”. Ms Nova said she was drawn to the foundation because of her love of sailing. As a child her parents would take her sailing around the world on their boat. “It was the most profound experience,” Ms Nova said as she tried to explain the joy and education she got from her open water sailing. “It’s hard to explain. I learned a real respect for nature and my family, we worked together as a team. I also learned a lot about life.” Ms Nova’s longest sail was 21 days from Bermuda to the Azores. During the press conference she said the Bermuda Sloop would encourage young people from all races and socio-economic backgrounds to work together. She said that sailing together would forge relationships. “It will bring Bermudians together and break down barriers,” she said. Ms Nova’s commitment to her Island is also illustrated by her choice to involve Bermudian vocalists on the Bermuda Sloop CD. Kwame Harris of Paget Primary and Laurin Davis of Elliot Primary, both of whom are ten years old, were approached to sing part of the chorus. Marcus Smith, who is nine and attends Prospect Primary, also sang in the chorus. They described Ms Nova as “nice” and said working in a studio was exciting. A local actuarial analyst, David Roache, also got the chance to work with Ms Nova. Mr. Roache entered and won the Island wide competition for a local male to sing the harmony on Together as One. Though he usually sings reggae Mr. Roache said he jumped at the chance to work with an international acclaimed musician and help out the sloop foundation. “She was a pleasure to work with,” he said. “She is very professional but she’s also friendly and has a great sense of humour.” Mr. Roache also appreciated the opportunity to help the foundation because he thinks a sloop will be a wonderful addition to the Island and provide young people with an excellent opportunity. The sloop, which has been named Spirit of Bermuda, will arrive in Bermuda in May 2006. The Heather Nova for the Bermuda Sloop Foundation CD is on sale at the Collector’s Hill Apothecary, Paget Pharmacy, AS Cooper, Sail On and many other locations. The CD costs $10 and all proceeds will go the foundation and ultimately the youth of Bermuda. Ms Nova will also be signing covers of the CD today at the Bookmart between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

I'm surprised Heather didn't also play there acoustically or something, or maybe an unlisted performance? I bet her performances in Bermuda are one of the best. Although, I think even such a small island can garner a lot of fans for Heather. I don't know how the population of Bermuda stands. I wonder where Heather performs that garners smaller crowds, because those performances are probably the best, unless they are like a big bundle like in the US, where they are even non-existent at this point.

Aquamarine is the most ocean-ish. But Storm has Bermuda connections too, but probably too personal. Maybe Fool For You or All I Need since she likes to play those.

For what it's worth, I had already contacted one of the stores M. mentions, SailOn. I haven't received a response yet, though.

No. maybe sometime via bermudasloop.com, heathernova.com, the two stores M. gave the link, bookmart.bm, Malcom from Bermuda Sloop,... I guess it would make no sense to order it sepearetely. We should do a combined order. Maybe Gerd for Europeans, Cassander for Americans, or such.

Well, you can email and arrange an order that way. SailOn says they ship worldwide. Bulk Orders might be better through the Sloop website though, like Gerd is trying. Though my bulk isnt like his bulk.

You can email them and arrange an order I'm sure. Well, I donno, but I am trying it at SailOn. I'll call them during the week if I get no reply.
Why doesnt the BermudaSloopSite work? Well, there's no place to order there, so you have to email anyway. Gerd has the email of a contact person there. But you need a new browser if ya cant view the site ![]()
