lazy. but i have to psych myself up for attempting to teach multiplication again. stupid standards. i don't know why multiplication should have to be second grade. it didn't used to be.

I don't remember when I was first taught multiplication. But I bet it was the 2nd grade. In 3rd grade we were already in the 'let's make them do endless problems over and over every day' mode.

In fact, I'm sure it was the 2nd grade, because I remember having that sheet of paper with the huge multiplication table on it, and thinking I'd never ever be able to memorize that whole thing.

Oh, it was second grade for me, too, but I already knew multiplication at the age of three, so it wasn't hard at all... :P

It's interesting... there was a debate on The Brains Trust many years ago about your earliest memory...
A.S. Byatt, the writer had clear recollection of herself in her cot, outside. Dr. Jonathan Miller recollected smells and pain with a cut knee... and Lewis Wolpert couldn't remember a damn thing from his very early life... My own memories are very vague and patchy from my early childhood.

I have a few memories of doing things before I was 2, and I remember my 2nd birthday. Between then and about 6, there's not much I remember. I did have a nasty concussion during this period though.

i wonder if it has anything to do with what kind of childhood you had? for me, i'm the oldest child, and my first three years or so were as an only child. it was a very pleasant time, we lived in an apartment on the campus of a small college. i wonder if i made more of an effort to hold onto those memories? not sure if that would explain it. but i don't remember anything before i was able to walk and talk.
i also wonder if hypnosis could bring back memories from the first year or two.

Well I guess Arizona is just behind, then. I know I didn't do multiplication until third grade, myself. And I remember still having times tables tests in fourth grade. In second grade, I remember struggling with borrowing in subtraction.
Today's lesson went pretty well, actually. I think they're starting to get it. We used linking cubes and made equal groups, and came up with the factors of 20 by using the cubes. And I showed them how they already know the 2s, 5s and 10s, since they can skip count. They they thought was pretty exciting. Bernd, today's lesson for you is, it's all about the equal groups.  I don't remember a lot of my early childhood. I think because we moved around a lot.

Well, I moved to Arizona in the 3rd grade. As far as Mathematics, I think we were in about the same place. I was a little bit ahead with reading skills.
However, I did not know how to write in cursive yet. Everyone in my class had been writing in cursive since the 2nd grade. They were not happy about having to relearn it because I didn't know it. As useless of a skill as that is, you'd think they would have been content to have me just not know it. I prefer to not use it anyway.

I hated it when the teacher would call on one of the slow readers to read out loud. So borrrrring! I think I learned cursive in second grade. But here they do it in third. I love cursive! I always choose to write in it. Except at work, since my kids don't know it yet. I have to print for them, and it's a bummer.

still feel the same (not really sick, but a little ichy/pain) it's going fast (but not fast enough) and the "infected" areas become red than swollen and back to normal in about a day, but it's not covering the whole body at once so the problem moves over my body.

i feel a bit sad, angry and blah. disappointed also.
oh and i just discovered that the girl who used this comp before me was using msn messenger but she forgot to log off. i'd have loved to talk to some of her contacts in Vancouver but they weren't online.

Pretty good if you consider that last night I discovered my car has been stolen... So I spent the evening at the police station, even though there's no hope of recovering it. And today I found out that my dad took an insurance policy that did not cover this... Yay!
But it's just a car, I' fine and they didn't b&e in my flat which would have been worse!
