I think it makes animals look intelligent. It makes people take a second look at animals, what they are capable of. Perhaps someone on the fence about adopting a cat or dog will see something like this and decide to "save" an animal.
And of course it's always debatable about who is getting "saved" when an animal is adopted. The animal or the human. Keep in mind, this is not much different from teaching an animal to use the litter box, fetch, roll over or a variety of other standard tricks that must people teach their animals, whether for fun or utility. And no matter what, Pavlovian conditioning always happens with animals, whether intentional or not.
