Hi Moerie. I will be in the frontstage in front of the speakers, so you won't hear a lot of click click click
. My new machine is only capable of 5 clicks per second, whereas my old one can do 10 pics a second .Cu there !

At these music festivals in Europe, is it fairly easy to be able to meet the musicians after their gig for autographs? I've been debating whether I'd want to bring my copy of the Heather Frith EP album cover. If I knew I probably wouldn't have any chance of meeting her after the show, I wouldn't risk it getting ruined. But if I thought there was some chance, maybe I'd bring it along. Or maybe I'll just settle for my copy of "300 Days..." since I consider the EP pretty irreplaceable. Any advice?
P.S. @johandeman, I'm envious that you get a photopass and have such a great camera for this type of venue/event. I'll not be bringing my own DSLR, since I think it's too risky that it would get stolen at the hostel. I hope you'll get lots of great photos and share with us here.

If I was you, I would not bring an EP with me. Where do you want to keep it during the concert? It can be pretty crowded in front of the stage. To much risk to damage it, I would think. Furthermore it is difficult to say if there will be a opportunity to meet her after the show.

@Martin: That was pretty much exactly what I thought. So I'll just avoid taking that risk with my precious "Frith" EP on this occasion and wait/hope for some U.S. dates to happen (she tweeted that she thought it was looking good for that a couple weeks ago).

Now I have my Eurostar tickets which I bought "to any Belgian station" as Bernd suggested. Does anyone know how I actually go about booking the tickets in advance for Brussel-Zuid to Antwerp-Centraal and back? Or do I really NEED to do that part in advance; could I instead just get them at the station (hoping the ones that best fit my itinerary don't fill up)?
I have a couple apps for my Android that are SNCB train schedules, so that will be very helpful...as long as I get a SIM with a data plan that works there. It looks like there are plenty of train times. I think I'm used to planning meticulously in advance.... Getting pretty excited about this trip and concert now ![]()

With a Eurostar ticket to Any Belgian Station you can hop on any onward train from Brussels to anywhere in Belgium within 24 hours of your Eurostar arrival in Brussels. On the return leg, you can use any suitable train from your Belgian starting point to Brussels within 24 hours of your Eurostar departure back to London. No reservation (and no additional booking) is necessary for Belgian domestic trains, you just hop on any train you want. One important note: make sure NOT to use a "Thalys" train between Brussels and Antwerp, your ticket is not valid there. But there is every few minutes a IC or a IR train, you can easily use these trains.

And don't forget, I think I have mentioned it before, but taking the Eurostar is like flying. You HAVE to be at the station at least 30 minutes before the train starts, and the security controls are very similar to those at airports. If you arrive less than 30 minutes before, you probably won't get into the train anymore.
How is your schedule for Saturday and Sunday?

I doubt it will be possible to meet Heather after the gig.
The artist arena is in a separate part of the site and there is lots of security. Even with my photopass I wasn't able to meet any artists yesterday. Casablanca used to be a small local festival, but it's become more professional.

@johandeman: It's too bad that Heather isn't selling VIP meet and greet, like I believe she has done on some tour dates of her own. No matter, I'm sure this will be a lot of fun regardless. Do you think there will be band merchandise? I'd like to get a copy of Sorrowjoy, and I think they're only ever at her shows. I'll still bring my "300 Days" just in case I do get lucky to meet her. It fits in a cargo pocket easily enough.
@Bernd: That's good information to know, especially the reminder about the deadline about getting on the Eurostar 30 minutes before it leaves. My schedule is this: 4 Aug. leave London 12:55 arrive Brussels 16:08 take onward train to Antwerp get taxi from Antwerp to Hemiksem 5 Aug. leave Brussels 08:52am arrive London 10:05 (I have Olympics tickets on 5 Aug. and also hoped to catch some of the Women's Marathon once back in London that morning) Working backward from 08:52 I probably have to be in Brussels in queue for Eurostar by around 08:00 to be on the safe side, and would have to leave Antwerp around 07:00 to do that. I don't know where I'm going to sleep following the festival on Sat.! I suppose I could pay to camp out, as I'd hate to be arrested for vagrancy but I won't actually have a tent. I was thinking of booking a bunk in a hostel called Abhostel back in Antwerp. How readily do you think I will be able to find a taxi back from Hemiksem to Antwerp after the festival ends if I were to try to do that? (Wow, I'm laughing at myself for how ill-planned this all is on my part! I did great with the Olympics & London stuff, but I'm throwing this side-trip together on the fly and it shows....)

Sounds good!
Also, don't forget that Belgium has a different time zone than England. Belgium is one hour ahead to England. And Antwerp is VERY beautiful, so if possible, make a short walk through it before entering a taxi.

Never been there, Ride. *notes it down in case he ever returns to Antwerp*.
If you didn't have such a limited time and the Olympics to go to, I'd recommend more time in Antwerp. As Bernd says, it's a beautiful city. But the Olympics only happen every four years, so I can see how that's a bit more unique and I'd bet you'd want to spend most of your limited time seeing Olympics stuff. Antwerp's a gem, though. (yes, pun intended )

Yes, indeed. It' s really a beautiful city. But, unfortunately, I guess that he won' t be able to enjoy Antwerp as his time schedule is really tight. Oh, but visiting the MAS-Museum at the Northern Port, without visiting the different interesting exhibitions on each of the 8 exhibition-floors - and have a break at the nice café on the ground floor, would be a sin, wouldn't it? I think you need at least half a day to visit Antwerp. Some weeks ago I was there for 2 days and I' m sure that I will visit Antwerp once again to see some landmarks that I couldn' t visit. Antwerp is a really interesting city! I visited the "MAS"-Museum, the "Het Steen", the "Rubens Huis”, the "Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal", the "Grote Markt", the "Carolus Borromeus Kerk" and had a wonderful break at the "Zuiderterras", directly situated at the Scheldt-River. The weather was nice and my stay was really perfect. I enjoyed the city of Antwerp and I took many pics. It' s a very dynamic city, full of tourist attractions, refreshing sea breezes at the Scheldt-River (and many seagulls) and good restaurants and cafés. I think that the summer is the perfect season for visiting Antwerp.Edit: @ScottLeffel: Oh, and the origin of the name „Antwerp“ is really nice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antwerp#Origin_of_the_name You should know this if you should visit the statue of the giant's hand being thrown into the Scheldt (at the “Grote Markt”). I guess that many people don' t know this and just don' t pay attention to the statue and the story behind it. Some chocolate shops sell little hands of chocolate ... It' s such a cute story ...

REMEMBER : FULL IS FULL !!!
Wednesday they closed the gates around 10 pm as it was too crowded. Remember it's a free festival ! If you want to have a good spot on the front row, best to queue in the tent since 21.30, when the other band is still playing on the main stage. As it's a free festival, the vibe is not the same as in an indoor gig (where there are only fans). Lots of drunk youngsters and local people who don't care about the music and go on ranting during a show ... This might be a good taxicompany (no personal experience though) : 03 828 25 25, that is ++3238282525... Enjoy it

Off course Antwerp is very beautiful, but it's much more than the classics Sabsi mentioned. If you leave the 'beaten track' you might be very surprised.
In the Kammenstraat there are lots of fashion stores. There is the Photomuseum on the 'Waalse Kaai' which always has amazing expos and is open on sunday too. Also, the port of Antwerp is very impressive ! Since a few years there are a lot of good concert venues in Antwerp (again). And even in venues that normally host classic music there are rock concerts now (Arenberg, Bourla, Elisabethzaal ...) And there are some other new venues like Trix ... Almost in walking distance of the trendy south of Antwerp there is the nature reserve Hobokense Polders, where you can find lots of rare birds, insects and plants. There is also a colony of half wild cattle (Galloways +- 15) and Konik horses (4). You can bump into them when you go for a walk there but they are not dangerous.

The problem is, he has not more than maybe two hours in Antwerp for sightseeing on Saturday, and no time at all on Sunday, as he has to leave at 7am already. So in two hours, I guess he cannot do much more than walking to Grote Market and to the river and visit some café.
Also, as far as I understand it, he flies today from USA to London, and tomorrow he will go further to Brussels, so he probably will have some strong jet-lag, too. I flew two times from USA to Europe, couldn't sleep at all in the plane, and back in Europe, I was very tired. So I really hope he won't suffer much from jet-leg.

And it's best not to expect too much of Heathers show as she doesn't play for her own crowd.
She probably will only play the classics and not very long. And probably the audience will be filled with drunk teenagers who talk all the time or shout obscene things at Heather.

Age limit for drinking beer is 16 years of age. At that age you don't need a lot to get drunk.
Still, I've seen worse on other festivals. Something else : I have seen some signing sessions the past few days (only 1 artist a day), but that doesn't mean Heather will do a signing session ... so I wouldn't be able to tell you. But fingers crossed !!!

Well sure, but for example they could not to sell alcohol, or could not to allow drunk people to go into the venue, or could throw out drunk people, or such.

Throw out drunk people ? The only money they get is from selling drinks as it's a free festival !
But still, I've seen worse on other festivals. But on a free festival there are even less people who care about the bands that are playing than on a paying festival.

Thanks for the Antwerp-Infos, Johan. They really sound good. Oh, and the Elisabethzaal is really great! I was there some weeks ago and the acoustics are really good there and the seats are really comfortable. Furthermore it' s situated directly at the Central Station and so it' s practical for everyone who goes by train. Well, but now back to the festival-gig: I wish everyone a great gig tomorrow night! Enjoy Heathers beautiful voice and I really hope that the crowd will be peaceful and everything will be fine ...
