Any other bronies here?

Decided to watch a few episodes to see what the fuss was about, but got sucked in and just have two more left to finish the first season, just in time for the second.

We need a bit more silly back around these parts.

Well, I'm not brony enough to sign on to a brony forum, but I watched all episodes available. And last week, I told a friend of mine, which pony she would be... :D
I guess everyone in Berlin should know MLP, because even our politicians do:

Both german, and lots of wrong details, but a funfact anyway.

Yes, this is a true funfact. The German Pirate Party is, according to polls, currently the 4th biggest party in Germany, and they often have "pony time" together. At least their Berlin State parliament members watch this show regularily.

Personally, I don't get it... I'm happy with Spongebob.

Pejama: I think that's good enough to be a brony! I don't do much other than watch the show and talk about it and maybe listen to some remixes now and then, but I'm still a brony. I also watch the occasional Tara Strong (Twilight Sparkle!!!!) interview, but again, not too much.

Bernd: Have you tried watching the show? A lot of people who are skeptical but decide to watch a few episodes end up really liking it. That happened to me. Start with Season 1 Episode 1 and go from there. After about four episodes I was hooked and then watched the entire first season, and then the second season as it came out.

OK, at Cassander's advice, I watched in the last days the whole season 1.

I liked especially Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, also Rarity, and Apple Bloom. The other characters were not so interesting for me, including Twilight Sparkle. I don't understand why the show is centered so much about Twilight Sparkle, since she has one of the least interesting characters of the show, in my opinion, and I don't like why she can enjoy so many privileges (being the favorite of Princess Celestia, having an assistant, writing friendship reports), while other can't. She is "first among equals", and I don't think kids should get taught concepts like this.

Also I don't like how all ponies bow before Princess Celestia. First, why bowing? And second, I was never fond of all that monarchy stuff. Monarchy is a concept of the Middle Ages and in today's time there shouldn't be any monarchies.

The MLP episodes were often too predictable, too well-balanced, and too overly didactic (friendship reports!) for me.

And sometimes, I thought I watch the Smurfs. They have kind of the same characters, and many more.

All this shouldn't sound too negative, MLP is really ok, but I still don't understand the hype, and I think there are better shows out there.

But hey, now I know what "pony time" means.

Is there any progress in season 2?

You might wish to try season 2. It's less focused on Twilight Sparkle overall and the writing of letters (Dear Princess Celestia) gets divided up among many different ponies, not just Twilight. I'd also say the letter writing is a little less emphasized and the show might be a smidgen less didactic. The other characters do get pets in the second season, but they mostly get ignored, alas.

Unfortunately, I'd also say the episodes of season 1 are better, but I probably like different things than you. I find the songs of season 2 to be more infrequent and to be boring when they come. Almost no fun and quirky Pinkie Pie songs. Most of the songs are more like showtunes.

For what it's worth, Twilight Sparkle is probably my favorite pony. I adore her. I also like Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy a lot. Rarity has grown on me and Apple Jack is just ok. She's good when interacting with others, but not so much when it's just focused on her.

My favorite episodes involve the ponies interacting with each other in fun and interesting ways. I find the show's villains are pretty weak, so I generally don't like those episodes as much. I love Pinkie Pie songs like Giggle With the Ghosties.

Why do I like the show? I find the characters to be interesting and well written for the most part. I love the animation style. I like the humor. There are subtle and not-so-subtle references to all kinds of stuff only adults will get, but those references don't take over the show. It's still about the characters. Basically, it's the opposite of Shrek 2, where adult jokes were the only thing of importance and they did not respect the characters at all.

OK, I have finished now season 2. Funnily, I watched season 1 German dubbed, and season 2 in original, but with German subtitles. I think the voices are quite similar.

Rainbow Dash and Applejack grew in me. I think Applejack has a nice accent in the original version. I barely could understand her and Rarity first, but it got better with each episode. Also I like Angel (rabbit from Fluttershy) very much.

Twilight Sparkle is still my least favorite pony.

Some episodes were good (especially with Pinkie Pie - I liked her best when she got angry, I laughed so much when Applejack broke the Pinkie Promise), some episodes were a bit lame (for example the episodes with the Cutie Mark Crusaders or with Zecora).

Glad you're enjoying it.

I can't imagine it without the original voices! Tara Strong, who plays Twilight Sparkle, is a somewhat prominent voice actress and has really embraced the brony fandom. She is the self-styled "Queen of the Bronies". We do not object.

Cutie Mark Crusaders are hit-and-miss for me. They need to get their cutie marks already and I think they're a bit too frequent. But they can also be hillarious. I loved their hillariously awful song/skit where each of them were doing something a different pony was skilled at and I thought the love potion and gossip episodes were pretty funny too.

Pinkie Pie Swear was great. Fluttershy episodes tend to be really good. She plays off the other ponies very well. And yes, Angel is great.

You are wrong about Twilight Sparkle, though. She's the best.

One of my favorite touches from season 2: In a later episode, Rainbow Dash can be seen hanging out at Twilight Sparkle's place reading a Derring-Do book. I like that they incorporated what she learned in an earlier episode into her character. Those touches make the show feel more alive. I wish there were more of them, to be honest.

*can't wait for season 3....*

Well, judge by yourself:

First two episodes in German:

Well, the episodes are not bad, but there are too many episodes, and they still haven't their cutie marks, so it gets a bit boring.

Also the Pinkie Sense! I think Pinkie Pie has the most variety in her character. Always being funny, but also responsible (Cake babies, guarding the Marzipan Mascarpone Meringue Madness). Plus, she can bake and do ice skating and can remember everypony's birthday. I think the best episodes are when she is insecure, remember the Gummy's "after-birthday" party and the Cake babies episode. Definitely my favorite character.

Similar with Fluttershy. I like her best when she gets angry, or more confident. Think of her Fluttershy's stare! My favorite scene in season 2 was when Angel didn't want to eat, and is very picky, but then Fluttershy stares at him and finally he eats his salad.

All she can do is magic and organization... Not much.

Well yes, true, I remember that scene well.

I still think the show is ok, but regarding the hype, I expected more. It's a good show to watch when you have a bit time and nothing to do, then it's easy to watch 3-4 episodes in a row. But it's not that I cannot sleep anymore until season 3...

I love those theme song compilations! Of course, I love the theme song even in English.

The German voices sound petty off to me, but I only watched the first episode in German. Might have to watch the second to really judge. Curious how they handle Giggle At The Ghosties as well. (I love that song! I love Pinkie Pie songs! )

I did have a problem with Pinkie Sense, actually. It was funny, but I found it a bit contrived since she didn't exhibit this ability in the other episodes before and I think in only one episode since. In contrast, Fluttershy's stare ability is used throughout the series and feels more organic to me. Also, for some reason, I wasn't a big fan of the Baby Cakes episodes. But overall, I'm a big fan of Pinkie Pie.

Fluttershy is great. In season 2, I loved the Putting Your Hoof Down episode (with Iron Will). It allowed Fluttershy to act differently and interestingly without seeming unbelievable. Great episode. I actually recently recommended it to a friend who has trouble with being assertive!

She's also very supportive and encouraging of her friends. Very positive. But she also struggles with being arrogant. I also like that the main character is smart rather than just pretty. She feels very "real" to me and seems like she'd be a great friend. Plus, she always tries to fix things around her, which is adorable. I donno how to explain how great Twilight is, but she is. Also, Spike.

I didn't expect much myself, to be honest. I usually don't like fad shows. But once I started watching, after several episodes, I just got addicted and really loved it. I love that it has funny injokes for adults but doesn't sell itself out for them. It still focuses on telling a good story with good characters. I guess that's the main thing: the characters feel very three-dimensional and interesting. I absolutely adore four of the main characters and like the others as well.

I'm sure I miss 99% of those jokes, especially references to other shows, names, movies, whatever. For example, I have read in some Youtube comment that "Canterlot" is a reference to "Camelot", and most people answered "yes, sure, that's obvious", but I thought: "what is Camelot? Never heard this word before."

And so on...

Oh, yes, Canterlot = Camelot should be obvious to any English speakers. Actually, I'm surprised Camelot isn't well known throughout Europe.

There are probably at least several references in each episode - even I don't get them all. For example, some of the landscapes in episodes like Dragonshy are reminiscent of classic cartoons like Roadrunner. Certain chase scenes are references to classic movie chase scenes. Again, probably more stuff than I even get. But I like the way they add to the story rather than interfering with it.

I'll look for an episode guide to see if this stuff is documented somewhere. But almost every name is a joke on something, usually taking a real name and changing it to sound like a horse-related word. Like Phillydelphia = filly (a young female horse) + Philladelphia (U.S. city). Manehattan = mane (horse's hair) + Manhattan (in New York City).

I'm sure it is! It is just me - never was interested in such a stuff.

Well, well, this may help:
http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/My_Little_Pony_Friendship_is_Magic_Wiki

Example:
http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Baby_Cakes
"The music that plays whenever Pinkie asks the Cakes to pick her as babysitter is based on Aquarela do Brasil, a Brazilian samba standard from the 1930s."
"Pinkie's instructions for using the crib mirror a line from The Simpsons episode The Last Temptation of Homer."
"She finds Pound Cake walking on the ceiling using his wings. The brief screeching violins echo the musical piece The Murder, made famous by the film Psycho."
etc...
