Hi All

I know that there have been tournaments and various polls on HNN about favourite songs by Heather, but I have a question.

I'm going to put together a playlist of 20 songs by Heather for my Mum to listen to as an introduction to the music of the wonderful Bermudan.

I have my own ideas on the 20 songs, but would anyone care to share their ideas on a playlist that they would put together for their Mum ?

Sparky

What kind of music does she generally like?

When introducing people, I usually just hand them one of Heather's albums based on what I think they might like.

For more traditionally minded people, I'd just go for The Jasmine Flower. I've actually gotten a lot of positive feedback on that. It 's a little older in its mindset than some of Heather's older work, so it might be more relatable to middle-age and older adults.

But if you want to cover the classics and present a wide range, I'd make sure to include the classics and maybe one or two from each album. I guess it depends on your tastes, but I'd think you have to hit Sugar and Island. Might want some live versions as well. Personally, I'd throw in Out In New Mexico or Ride, I Miss My Sky, Motherland, Everytime, Storm, Ruby Red or I'm Alive, and Shaking The Doll or Mothertongue. Maybe a bside like Grow Young or Water From Wine and perhaps some live versions. A good classic Verona live with a poem would be lovely.

But I still think you can't go wrong with The Jasmine Flower and it also presents Heather as a living musical force.

Yeah, tell us about what she likes.

Is she more of a melody person, does she like beats, guitars or sing along songs?

:D

My Mum has pretty eclectic taste. She'll listen to anything from Queen to classical, Blondie to country. She loved the album 'Raising Sand' that Robert Plant did with Alison Krauss.

I thought about giving her a copy of 'The Jasmine Flower', but Heather has such a broad catalogue of songs, that it'd be a shame to leave some of her other stuff off a play-list.

She does like to sing-a-long (or hum if she doesn't know the lyrics ) especially in the car.

Christina's selection is pretty good and wouldn't be far off my own.

Maybe Tomorrow is great for hum-a-long I've just noticed.

Here's what I've opted for...

The Storm
Walking Higher
Motherland
Like Lovers Do
Maybe Tomorrow
Spirit In You
Not Only Human
A Way to Live
Heart And shoulder
Winter Blue
Walk This World
Island
I'm Alive
Out In New Mexico
It's Only Love
Paper Cup
Gloomy Sunday
All I Need

Had to stop at 18 songs as I couldn't get 20 onto a cd

Let us know what she thinks...

Alas, I didn't post in time to warn you about putting A Way To Live on there, but at least now she can hear the full range, from the best to the worst of Heather.

It's certainly a song that divides opinion, that's for sure.

I'm giving my Mum the cd tomorrow, so I'll update on here when she's had a chance to check it out.

A Way to Live is a superb song imo. Does it really divide opinion?

I have no idea how many people agree with me, but I pretty much consider it her poorest song.

Others, like you and Christina, seem to like it quite a bit.

If I were to choose a song from Redbird, I'd definitely go for either I Miss My Sky or Motherland, maybe even perhaps Overturned. Has she ever played Overturned live? I don't think so. It's a pity.

Was that the only time she played it?

I'm not sure if it was recorded, alas.

I agree it's not the best song on Redbird but I think it's far from her poorest song. I'd probably choose "I Miss My Sky" as the best off Redbird..

For me, "If I Saw You in a Movie" must rank as one of her poorest songs.

If I were to choose a song from Redbird, i think it would be I Miss My Sky.... Definitely NOT Motherland (I can't stand this song), neither A Way To Live.

Well, I think Redbird is my least favourite album from Heather .

Motherland is awesome.

But Redbird is my least favorite album cause there aren't enough songs as good as Motherland.

And I like If I Saw You In A Movie a lot better than A Way To Live... the lyrics of the former are certainly better than the latter, though I agree that the production is a problem on IISYIAM. I'd love to hear it acoustic, actually. I think it'd be really interesting if Heather performed the entire album South as an acoustic concert with all new arrangements.

Success

Another potential convert. Saw my Mum last night and she really likes the cd I put together. She's been listening to Heather whilst in her car.

I always knew that my Mum had good taste
