Great vibes around here.
I should log onto this thread at lunchtimes, when I'm usually hurried, stressed and irritated

Never say that, it can Always get worse. For example, terrorists could attack your office and shoot you in the back so you get paralyzed from the neck down. But it's never so bad that it can't get worse, that's a comforting thought to me.

Christina's comment along the lines of 'tomorrow could be worse' echoes a Russian saying I've come across. Anyone familiar with it?

But now I'm feeling split in half as I got a job offer in Washington so I have to decide what to do.

According to what I know, it is Polish.
But maybe this is like Ensign Chekov always says, don't you rememeber the old Russian fairy-tale of Cinderella...

There was once a famous German schlager called "Ein Student aus Uppsala" ("A (male) student from Uppsala) - I wonder if it was famous in Sweden as well...?
This guy used it as background song for his youtube video:
Uppsala

I'm more surprised which schlager songs you do not know! That's BR 1 basic education!

Yeah, my parents always listened in the 1980's to the 7am clock news on BR1, followed by the "Musikjournal". Mostly music from Howard Carpendale, Roger Whittaker, Nicole, Reinhard Fendrich, Mike Krüger "Der Nippel", etc., and often with the comments of Enrico de Paruta between.

They listened so loud to this, that I woke up (and finally went to school).

But I still don't know the schlager songs you mention! Maybe because they are not from the 1980's? I don't remember 1960's or 1970's music in the Musikjournal. The Uppsala song was in 1969 in the German hitlist for 14 weeks! http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirsti_Sparboe

Yeah, when I was a really small child, in the kindergarten age, they played some tunes of "Morning has broken" by Cat Stevens everyday.
I liked the melody very much (I could whistle it by heart), but it was always the signal for my father to go to work - which was on the other hand always sad for me.

Yeah, that's the great innovation of University education. Instead of answering questions with single sentences, it's considered more appropriate to answer them with essays...

Q. Discuss forms of Civil Resistance and their relation to Economic Policy in France over the period 1965-68.
A. No.

I don't remember that I "answered questions" or "wrote essays" at university exercises. Most often, an exercise was "find a proof for this or that", and not "what do you think about that?" or "write an essay"...

slightly concerned for my littlest sister (she's 16). she goes to hospital on 2nd April for results to verify if she suffers from vertebrobasilar migraines. According to my sis the docs told her that this could be causing her dizziness, leg weakness, nausea, stomach pains and of course, migraines. I understand she is going to have an MRI in April as well. These sort of things shouldn't happen to little sisters
