You noticed that at 12:33pm? Was the alarm bell ringing at 12:30pm maybe?

It was a general statement...
But somehow it feels as if it rang at 12.30h, so you are even a little bit right...

What did NOT surprise me today is that someone who needs to ask a few questions to a client doesn't have any time do to that, but still has time to take 3-4 cigarette breaks of 10 min each.

It surprised me today very much how many people haven't seen the word "cover", although it was always standing there.

Could you specify what you mean by that?

I'm surprised by how boring my dad and his best friend (also a good friend of mine) can be when they talk about work.

Oh, I'm speaking of Waves Of Sound from 7Sky Magazine.

Look here:

gerd wrote:
HELP!

I'm sorry for crying, but is there anybody from switzerland here, who can buy the magazine for us with the CD?

"Listen to the Stories!
An eclectic pool of individual singer/songwriters, both well-known and unknown, have each been given the mission to write a song based on one of the 11 stories. To download these songs for free, click onto a story and then onto its corresponding link. You will receive an accompanying “Waves of Sound” CD cover in the latest edition of 7sky, available at all kiosks."

7Sky announced only a "CD cover" in their magazine, but Gerd and many others haven't read "CD cover", but only "CD". Needless to say that a CD was *not* included in the magazine.

Well, to defense Gerd and myself, who made the mistake at first as well - I found it rather unusaul that a magazine is selling or presenting CD covers, while extra CDs or DVDs are quite common.
But sure, yes, sometimes opening one's eyes is quite useful...

It was NOT surpising me today that Heath Ledger has died, because I had never heard of him before... well, I know almost nothing about movies anyway.

I wonder if we should start a thread "Tell me what hasn't surprised you today" as well!

Whoa! And this is where I found out! So random too that he of all people would do that. Too bad really, he was a good actor who starred in many great movies.

Today I was suprised to receive a letter from a Heather Nova fan in America with three lovely photos of Heather walking on the street. Probably from the mid 90ties. Thank you so much, Mark!

Maybe the wrong thread here, but my father was very surprised last Saturday.

He asked me: How to come from Basel to Rodersdorf? Can you check the timetable?
I answered (without looking at the timetable): Rodersdorf in Solothurn? Tram, maybe each 15-20 minutes, very famous tram line, as the tram also crosses the border to France twice.

Well, I checked the timetable later, and I was right.

My parents have a calendar for 2008, which was in December 2007 in their newspaper.

According to this calendar, we have in 2008

- tomorrow, on Tuesday, February 19: Shrove Monday.
- on Wednesday, February 20: Shrove Tuesday.
- on Thursday, February 21: Ash Wednesday.

Obviously, they have put the holidays of 2007 into the calendar of 2008, because last year Ash Wednesday was indeed February 21.

There won't be any new printed edition of the famous Brockhaus Encyclopedia after 200 years anymore (this last one was the 21st).
The editor says he surrendered to wikipedia...

I'm quite shocked.

I wanted to go from A to B here in Nuremberg and looked on the map to find the way, and my colleague said to me "you are still using maps? Maps are old fashioned, thanks to guidance systems".

Damn, I love maps so much. I can look hours on them. It's kind of meditation for me, to see where there are houses, streets, forest, rivers, railway stations, buslines. I can spend hours on Google Earth as well, for example when I look at borders. Recently, I checked the border between Berne and Solothurn, or between Lucerne and Nidwalden. Look at here, the red part is the town of Lucerne. Isn't that interesting, this little part close to Nidwalden on the other side of the lake? A guidance system wouldn't even tell me of its existence.

I think when people cannot read maps anymore, they will also lose their knowledge in culture and history one day as well. And this would be terrible, in my opinion.

I cannot follow this conclusion.

why should they read maps when there is a new method to navigate? I'm sorry it just sounds oldfashioned to me.
People are developing, using new techniques or abilities.

If I would say people who do not learn how to create punchcards will never get a program to run. Who in the modern world do know what a punchcard is?

So what is a map? a printed piece of paper, showing an maybe old historic status of an area. Why should I read it?

A navigation/guidance system does only know how to come from A to B by car.

A map is much, much more. It shows me that there are mountains in Austria and Switzerland, it shows me that France has a border to Spain and Sweden is at the Baltic Sea. It shows me that the equator goes through Africa and Australia is far away from Europe. It shows me also that there is elephant population in Thailand and that there are pyramids in Egypt. It shows me that the Rhine starts in Switzerland and ends in The Netherlands, and that Vienna is lying at the Danube river. Historically, it shows me how far the Romans went into today's Germany (Limes), which countries were occupied by German troops in WWII, or that Germany was divided until 1990. It shows me that the Northern part of Germany is more protestantic, and the Southern part of Germany is more catholic (it helps to know here that Sweden is Northern of Germany and Rome is Southern of Germany combined with historical knowledge).

A navigation/guidance system cannot do all that. When people don't read maps anymore, I fear all this cultural and historical knowledge gets lost one day.

I know of people who cannot find their home town on a map anymore. This is terrible.

On street maps, I see immediately where there are streets, forests, rivers, business parks, sight seeing points, or were the central area is.

Of course, navigation/guidance systems are helpful. But all they can do is guiding someone through the streets from A to B, and all the driver can do is blindly following it. Maps help understanding the world. Maps are definitely not "old fashioned".

I guess i understand what Bernd means. I like maps, too. Of course navigation systems are great as well, especially if you often drive alone but I think they should definitely co-exist with maps. But may be it's because I am old-fashioned. Cos I would even love to have such an old black telephone. And one of the most precious things to me is my map of Scotland which has travelled with me. I think I have my nostalgic day today....

I was surprised to get the Microsoft Office 2008 (MAC) update today which I paid 23 Euro for. Well i bought the 2004 version less then 3 month ago and there was this official Technology Update Guarantee from Microsoft. So i am surprised it really worked, although I bought the 2004 version to a special reduced price.

So it is a good thing that this time Microsoft's guarantee worked. Thanks to Microsoft.

A problem so is that according to the newest test from the most qualified german computer magazine (c't) this current 2008 office is totally instable and should not be installed before there is a first Service Package available.
