Btw., after touring around germany (Feldafing, Munich, Ulm, Donauwörth, Berlin, Potsdam) due to two projects for the last couple of weeks, I feel pretty tired. Well, one project is nearly complete, the other not, but will include again a lot of helicopter flying, so I do not mind.

Anyway, one day of work here in Graz, tomorrow I am off to germany again.

internet for sure as a great inpact on social life, both in positive and negative way. I didn't found my former gf via internet and we hardly used the internet for communication at all. maybe for some email and to book flights, but that's it.

Currently I have two of them, but I will cancel one contract by the end of the year. Use it only for business travelling, because it makes the administrative stuff much more easier.

To get a Bachelor's degree in the US is equivalent to going to undergraduate. Master's and PhDs are for graduate school, which comes after undergraduate. No one takes graduate unless you are a genius, and I've heard of one person doing that.

Ahh, now things are a little bit clearer to me. We only got this separation recently, but all is still at the same university, it is only different studies you have to make sequentially.

Still most people do their Master after the Bachelor, because industry is not really recognizing this degree.

Graduate school here is schooling after you go to a university for 4 years. Graduate school is also at a university, but it is the schooling one gets after they get their first 4 years of undergraduate schooling here. Maybe your country doesn't have a system of a so called "graduate school." From outsiders, I've heard some people say that it seems more common that schools go by your overall grade point average (GPA) rather than limit the number of bad grades you can get. I think the school I'm at is stricter than some, even though in most cases, both GPA and limit on letter grades coincide with each other.

so how do you finish undergraduate school, with a bachelors degree ? at wich age do you start undergraduate school ?

it really sounds very different to european education scheme ...

The rules regaing dissmissal from university have been tigthened only recently here in Austria. the main reason was that a lot of people came to the exams without being prepared properly hoping to pass in some why (and maybe only get a 'D') and if not trying the next time again. after introducing a limit in failures, people are only coming to exams when they are really prepared

In the program I'm currently in, say if you fail a course, and then take it again and do better than failing, they still count the failing grade, which isn't right. If you have 3 failing grades, they just kick you out of the program just like that.

Is graduate school like this in general? Thank you again!

What do you mean with graduate school ? At university this seems to me like a normal procedure - a little bit strict, but still. i know some people who had to leave university because they had too many negative grades.

when i was a teaching assistant at university, i always tried to give people positive grades, but sometimes it was just not possible (like when someone only made 5 out of 120 points in total)

Not true, see Mario's example.

IMHO especially in computer industry you can get the needed functionality quite cheap if you do not stick to a certain brand.

Beside certain computer games you can do everything with linux that you can do with windows as well, but linux is free, while windows costs a lot of money. there are some small differences in fincutionality in both OS, but it's not really a big issue. only if you are using certain hardware you'll be getting some trouble with linux.

I personally think that e.g. apple products are totally overpriced. they look cool (if you like the design), but it is like with a clothing, you pay a lot of money just for the brand. the new apples even have the same electronics inside, and the core of the OS is taken from unix, so the only thing still being unique is the GUI.

Can you please tell me what you are doing with your notebooks, in order to really need these resources ???

I have a Pentium-M with 1.6 GHz and 512 MByte of RAM and I can do everything I really want to do with it. In fact, most of the time it operates at only 600 MHz, only when doing some MPICH-based simulations or playing DIV-X movies, it speeds up to it's full 1.6 GHz.

And why the hell do you need 2 GByte of RAM ? I just had a look at my memory status, and currently some 382 MByte are free at my system. But I am having Mozilla, KDevStudio, Kopete, Gimp and XMMS running ...

You mean FEC - rate ? the data rate should only have an impact on the picture quality, but not at the error-correction capabilities.
