Wonderful selection!

Agreed! I'm intrigued by her doing Lorde's "Royals" . . . I'd love to hear her version of that!

I don't think Heather makes that assumption. The expensive items aren't the only items for sale - she offers digital downloads and unsigned CD's and albums at more reasonable prices, so she's offering things that span a wide range of prices for fans across the spectrum of financial ability/willingness. Granted, while the unsigned CDs and albums are being sold at twice the cost of a typical CD you might find on Amazon, gerd pointed out that she's trying to...

Quote:

...get first money for the record from the fans who can afford and make the album possible, not sure if it could be otherwise. I guess there would be no albums anymore without her fans. She is not played in Radio or so anymore.

I take issue with the proposition that "only rich and privileged fans" are purchasing these signed and dedicated offerings. I really struggled with whether to to get a signed/dedicated CD and/or an album with my name listed in the credits in the "Thank you..." section. I am neither rich nor privileged. However, I ultimately opted to buy both. Why? Because frankly, that's where my priorities are. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't buy fancy cars. I don't have a fancy house. My TV is 18 years old. I buy generic brands of food. My bed is falling apart and the wallpaper in my bedroom is starting to peel off. But my CD and album collections are magnificent!!! It is my passion! And I am a serious collector of certain artists . . . I have an almost obsessive desire to get my hands on as much as I can of certain artists' things. It is incredibly meaningful for me to have a CD that is actually signed by one of these special artists. To have it actually personalized by having my name written onto the cover by the artist gives me immeasurable joy. The idea that my name could be included in the credits of an album is hugely meaningful to me. So I buy it NOT because I am "rich and privileged" but because "that's my thing" - it gives me joy. I didn't buy these things "without flinching" . . . I struggled with the decision to purchase, e.g., a signed and dedicated CD, because it IS costly, but for me, I'd rather have a signed and dedicated CD than the latest iPhone, or new wallpaper in my bedroom. It simply comes down to priorities. I don't judge people for wanting to spend their money on what makes them happy, nor do I presume that they are rich or privileged because they choose to spend their money on things that aren't a priority for me.

I for one am absolutely DELIGHTED that Heather is offering so many collectible treasures!

And I agree 100% with Estellem that a CD of rarities and unreleased tracks would be AWESOME!!!

The optimal running time for a single side of 12" vinyl is 16-20 minutes (and the maximum is 25 minutes, but the sound quality suffers). You can fit about 80 minutes of music on a CD. So, if Heather has say between 65 and 80 minutes of music, she would need a double vinyl album but wouldn't need more than a single CD.

For example, I have London Calling by the Clash on both CD and vinyl which is about 65 minutes long. It's a double vinyl album but just a single CD.

My guess would be that Heather has too much music to fit onto a single album but not too much to need a double-CD and it's more cost effective to put it out as a single CD.

Well, I tried again this morning when I woke up and I was able to access the site and I placed my order, so it was apparently just a temporary problem. YAY!!!

I ordered the signed/dedicated CD, the digital demos, and the "name in the credits, signed and dedicated vinyl." I think I might have gotten the last "name in the credits, signed and dedicated vinyl" because it appears they were only making it available to 50 people and it now appears to be sold out. Looks like I made it just in the nick of time!

Now I have to take out a second mortgage to pay for all of these things . . .

Hey everyone, I've been away from the forum for awhile, but I'm back and I'm SO EXCITED for Pearl!!! I think the cover photo is great. Heather looks awesome (as always).

I'm trying to access the pre-order website that gerd posted in the #1 post on this thread (https://HeatherNova.lnk.to/PreorderPearlEM) but for some reason I'm getting an error message and can't access it. I keep getting this:

"This page isn’t working heathernova.merchcowboy.com is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500"

Am I the only one having this problem, or did I just have the misfortune of trying to access the site during a brief shut-down? I hope this is a temporary problem! I guess I have until the middle of May - but it looks like certain things are getting sold out, so I hope it's resolved soon!

Ok . . . this is a little strange, particularly considering the pronunciation is marred by a peculiar accent of unknown origin.

I actually think that Heather should consider dispensing with the Kraftwerk intro she's been playing as intro music to her concerts and replace it with about 5 minutes of this.

"Heather Nova . . . Heather Nova . . . Heather Nova . . . Heather Nova . . . Heather Nova . . . Heather Nova . . ."

I saw bass guitar prodigy Victor Wooten last week and have tickets to see Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) in two weeks. I also just got tickets to see Shakira in Chicago in January 2018, so pretty soon I can check that one off my bucket list.

This is great! Shortly after seeing Heather in Chicago last year I (inexplicably) stopped receiving email notifications for new forum posts in heathernova.net. My settings still reflected that I was to receive notifications, but for some reason, I wasn't getting them. When I woke up this morning I had (for the first time in a year) notifications, and there were 27 of them! So now I'm starting to catch up on everything I've missed over the past year and I'm having a blast, learning about everything that has happened since my absence including a European Oyster tour (which I understand is all over now?) and some new songs! Just downloaded "Love Wins" from Amazon and it's great to have new music!

That seems to perfectly fit with the "changes for the good" part of "Everything changes, changes for the good."

It's interesting . . . while we all obviously love Heather and would never wish her anything but joy and happiness (to repay her for the joy and happiness she's brought to all of us through her music), it's clear that strong emotion can be a powerful musical muse, even if (particularly if?) that strong emotion is negative/sad/melancholic.

So in a sense, when Heather suffers, her fans benefit.

An odd relationship it can be . . . between artist and fan.

It's interesting to see the forum buzzing with activity from US fans throughout Heather's North American tour, and when she headed back to Bermuda things on heathernova.net came to a screeching halt. It's almost as if American fans are all collectively laying in bed, entangled in the sheets, tousled hair and puffing on cigarettes with blissful smiles on our faces.

1. Click on the "Reply" button (i.e., NOT the "Fast Reply" button).

2. There is section near the bottom of the Reply window identified as "Attach file."

a. Click "Choose File" button and locate the picture on your computer;

b. Click "Upload"

3. Click "Submit" button when you're ready to submit your post.

Keep in mind your pictures have to be under 1 megabyte or they won't upload, so resize/shrink if necessary.

I seem to remember reading somewhere (I can't find it now) that there is a 1 MB size limit to photos you want to post. Try reducing the size to under a megabyte and see if it works.

I can't believe Prince died today. The term "musical genius" gets tossed around pretty liberally, but Prince deserved that description. I saw him live several times and I own everything he ever commercially released because it was all AMAZING. I'm absolutely heartbroken.

I'm getting a little paranoid about the Evanston performance not showing up on the download page yet. It has been five days since the performance. Heather specifically told the Evanston audience that a recording of the show would be available on her official website at some point (I don't recall if she said after a day or two or three . . . ), but haven't most of the shows been posted within at least 2-3 days after the performance? It would be just my luck that the ONE show I was able to attend was the one show where the person responsible for recording it forgot to hit the "Record" button! I hope this comment is rendered moot pretty soon!

Thank you everybody for the kind words regarding my review and for conveying "glad you had a good time!" comments. I'm still buzzed from the whole experience. I had some horrible/tragic/stressful things happen in my personal life in the four days leading up to the show that almost made me skip the trip to Chicago and which contributed to my highly emotional state that evening and to my sappy comments on heathernova.net. However, it didn't take long to recognize the show was EXACTLY what I needed during a ridiculously difficult few days.

Anyhow - thanks for the nice comments everybody. I'm looking forward to reading the reviews of her remaining shows and REALLY looking forward to her next US tour!

And the last photograph . . . when we arrived at the venue and we were giving our names to a S.P.A.C.E. employee for the VIP/Meet and Greet, I noticed they had a framed promotional flyer for Heather's show. I asked the employee whether they had any extra flyers because I would love to have one. He said it was the only one they had, but that he could let me have it after the show. When the show concluded and as we were starting to leave I stopped: "Wait! I really wanted to get my hands on that flyer!!!" I went back to the area where the flyer was, and much to my disappointment there was a new flyer for a different show in the frame. "OH NO!!!! It's GONE!!!" Just as I turned to leave, the S.P.A.C.E. employee who said he'd save the flyer for me ran over to me and said: "I saved it for you!" He reached behind a counter, opened a drawer, and pulled out the flyer that had previously been in the frame!!! What a NICE GUY and what a fabulous way to end the evening at S.P.A.C.E.!!!

The Meet and Greet passes. Interestingly, my friend Tom got a "Europe Tour" meet and greet pass. Both the N. America and Europe VIP passes had the same thing on the back, which is the "You and Me VIP" side depicted on the bottom. I also bought a keychain at the merchandise table, which is depicted as well.

Yesterday my wife Lisa and left our house in St. Louis, Missouri to make the five hour drive to see Heather in Chicago (Evanston, Illinois, to be precise. Evanston is a Chicago suburb, located about 12 miles north of downtown Chicago). Five hours of listening to Heather non-stop, and getting really excited to see our first Heather Nova show ever!

We arrived at S.P.A.C.E. about 30 minutes before the Meet and Greet was supposed to start. Our friend Tom arrived minutes after we did, but Tom didn't have to travel as far: he actually lives in Evanston 5-10 minutes away from S.P.A.C.E. I had purchased Meet and Greet tickets for the three of us. I was terrified to meet Heather. What do you say to somebody that means so much to you? What do you say to somebody whose music brings you such peace and joy and happiness?

There were five fans that paid for the Meet and Greet tickets: Tom, Lisa, me, and two really nice guys who seemed equally excited to see her. They led the five of us inside the venue just after 6:00 pm, and shortly thereafter Heather walked into the room. I hoped she couldn't see me shaking. She shook everybody's hand and we all stood in a circle and introduced ourselves to her. We were near chairs, and I asked Heather at one point if she'd be more comfortable sitting down, but Heather declined, saying she'd been sitting in a car all day and standing was better for you anyway.

Heather was sweet, she was friendly, and extremely cordial, but she also looked like she was tired and I felt a tinge of guilt - I felt like we were stealing valuable time from her to relax or spend time with her son before the show (she told us sadly that Sebastian was going back home tomorrow) but like I say, she was really sweet about it all regardless. The one moment she seemed to really perk up was when my friend Tom talked to her a little sailing. I started to ask her about heathernova.net, and she interrupted me to clarify that this wasn't "her" website, but that it was run by a good and loyal friend of hers. I said "You mean Gerhard, or Gerd?" She smiled and said, "Yes, Gerd, he's a great guy." I told her I was aware it was a "fan" site, but I was curious whether she ever visited the website to see what people were saying about her. She seemed amused by my question, and said that at first she did, but she doesn't go to the website very much anymore, because, she laughed, "it felt kind of weird." I think I can understand that - I could see how it might be strange to go to a website where everybody basically worships you. At one point after about 20 minutes her assistant Emily said that the venue was about to open up for concert-goers, so we should probably wrap things up - indicated that Heather would be happy to sign things we may have brought, and she could take pictures. I felt embarrassed handing Heather three CD's I wanted her to sign and apologized for bringing three. Heather just laughed and said: "Oh, this is nothing! Some guy brought in a huge stack of CDs to sign, many of which I didn't even recognize!" She graciously signed the CDs, allowed us to have our pictures taken with her, and she went on her way. I was very proud of myself for not standing there like a blubbering idiot the whole time. It was a great start to a magical evening!

There were four rows of tables in front of the stage, with five tables in each row. I was sitting at a table in the second row, and much closer than I'd expected to be. I couldn't believe how close I was to the stage. There was general admission seating on the sides of the stage and behind the tables. The venue was reasonably full, but there were some empty seats and I don't imagine it was sold out. I'm not great at guesstimating numbers, but I'd say there were maybe 300 or so people in the audience. What a perfect and intimately sized audience! It was almost like watching Heather in your living room (except it was like a really big living room).

Before Chris Riffle started playing, I went over to the merchandise table and noticed there were three charcoal drawings and they were selling for $100.00 per drawing. Emily said that Heather had just made the drawings that day. I picked out my favorite one, a keychain, an LP of The Way it Feels, and two t-shirts (one for me and one for Lisa). Emily kindly offered to keep our items at the merchandise table so we didn't accidentally spill something on it during the show. We returned to our table and shortly thereafter I saw Sebastian standing behind the merchandise table. I couldn't resist . . . I walked back to the merchandise table and introduced myself to Sebastian and told him how much his mother's music meant to me. I also introduced myself to Sebastian's friend Max and they told me they went to school together in Bermuda. Both boys were really sweet and friendly.

Chris Riffle was a very appropriate warm-up act for Heather. I was surprised to see that he played a classical guitar (as opposed to a standard acoustic guitar). The nylon strings gave his instrument a very mellow sound. In all honesty, his guitar playing was pretty rudimentary, but his voice was nice and his songs were very pleasant. I was surprised at how quiet the venue was for him. You could hear a pin drop.

Heather and Arnulf came on at 8:30 pm and played until just before 10:00. I posted the set list earlier. I just couldn't believe how amazing these songs sounded live!!! I've seen the YouTube videos of her performances, I've purchased the mp3's of her performances, but these just don't give justice to the actual live experience. I sobbed throughout the concert at the beauty of the music and lyrics - 30 seconds into Treehouse and already I needed a tissue. It was absolutely surreal. And her voice?!?!? OH MY GOD!!! How can she sing night after night after night and sound so perfect and amazing?!?!

I have been a serious Heather fan for years and I wasn't surprised that I loved her performance, but the big surprise for me of the evening was how much Arnulf blew me away. I fell in LOVE with Arnulf! Heather picked the absolute PERFECT person to accompany her on tour. His voice was great, his playing exquisite and professional - Just amazing. And after the show he was extremely nice - he allowed me and Lisa to get a picture with him and he seemed like a really genuinely wonderful person. During the show he complained a little about being exhausted and looking forward being able to spend the following day in bed in his hotel.

After the concert Heather went to the merchandise table and cordially signed autographs and took photographs with anybody who wanted them. I returned to the merchandise table where Emily retrieved my purchases, and I asked Heather if she could sign my LP. I reminded her "it's for David and Lisa" and she smiled and told me she remembered our names.

It was an absolutely magical evening and I've been on Cloud 9 ever since. Lisa and I spent the night at Tom's house in Evanston and Tom and I stayed up until 3:30 am gushing about the experience.

I took a few photographs of the show, but my camera is horrible in bad light, and they are unfortunately lousy photographs . . . so many better photos taken by other people are posted throughout this forum, so I'll spare you those grainy shots. But I did want to share a few other pictures that have great meaning for me. I'll post them in separate comments.

OMG . . . Heather Nova was AMAZING. The meet and greet was phenomenal - it was my best friend, my wife, me, and two other guys (who were very nice). She signed some CD's, we had a picture, after the show I got a picture with Arnulf, I bought a beautiful charcoal drawing of Heather's, I met Heather's son Sebastian - there is so much to talk about, but it's late and I need to to get some sleep. However, I wanted to post the setlist to anybody who cares. I'll post some comments/impressions about the show later, but here was the setlist of the concert that started at 8:30 pm and ended at 9:55 pm:

1. Treehouse
2. I Wanna Be Your Light
3. Girl on the Mountain
4. Island
5. Sea Glass
6. Paper Cup
7. The Archeologist
8. Winterblue
9. Walking Higher
10. Moon River Days
11. London Rain
12. Fool For You
13. Like Lovers Do
14. Heart and Shoulder
15. Walk this World

16. Until the Race is Run
17. Sugar

The concert was absolutely heavenly and more than I ever could have expected. Thank you heathernova.net for making certain I knew when Heather was coming back to the USA, for giving me ticket information, for giving me meet and greet information, etc. THIS is why I participate in forums like this - if heathernova.net didn't exist, I never would have known Heather was coming to the US, and I never would have had the opportunity to participate in what turned out to be one of the greatest evenings of my life. I owe a great deal to this website and to Gerd, Bernd, and everybody else who provides significant contributions to this website. I don't even know how to begin to thank you.

Well, she's more apt to play Mesmerized than the one I was thinking of requesting: These Walls. Lol.

Welcome Tim!!! Great picture of you and Heather!!! I have meet and greet tickets for Evanston tonight and frankly, I'm terrified! What on EARTH am I going to say to Heather Nova without sounding like a dope? "Hi! Ummm... like, I really like your music and I have posters of you up at my office and at home. So like, you're awesome!" God help me...

Thank you for posting your comments from all of the shows Cass. They're entertaining to read and really well written. I find myself feeling anxious as I read them though, as I await my first live Heather Nova show next week. I'm stoked!

I think it's great you were able to expose your brother to Heather AND get him an autographed CD AND have the pleasure of knowing he was so into the show. How cool is that?!?
