Oh, roses as a symbol of romance/courtship and rose gold as a symbol of marriage, using a play on words. That makes sense. Didn't know rose gold was that connected to wedding bands but maybe it is these days!

This song sure does remind me of Soon Alaska - both are stocked full of Arctic imagery and both focus on relationships that never came to pass. The poem mentions Alaska as a real place to anchor it, Rose Gold mentions Thunder Bay (a city in Canada).

I like the sound, I like most of the imagery, especially in the verses. The theme of regret, of not knowing. But that metaphor the Chorus is built around sure is odd - what does rose gold have to do with roses? When I think of rose gold, I think of iPhones or trendy jewelry, not flowers. Mixed metaphor and it doesn't seem to call back to the winter/arctic imagery either. Something growing in the cold is good but rose gold??

I enjoy the song and like a lot of the writing and the whole mood of it. But maybe I just don't understand the "rose gold" reference.

Rose Gold
by Heather Nova
(Rotterdam 2018)

(Verse 1)
And the path was unfolding in the charm of my heart that I didn't know,
And the boy was out walking on the street in the falling snow
With a Walkman in his cold hands and the music speaking straight to his soul
In the moment that I felt it, in the shadow of doubt that I let it go.

(Chorus A)
What happens when you feel it but you let it go?
Those roses planted still are gonna grow.
We made choices but how do we ever know
Which rose is gonna turn out to be rose gold?

(Verse 2)
White blanket of nothing for miles till Thunder Bay,
In the [???] looking backwards on the highway -
That's all we have to go on sometimes,
The years we spend crossing the continents of our lives.

(Chorus A)

(Break)
Don't let it, don't let it go,
Don't let it get away from you
When you find some thing that's true.

(Chorus B)
What happens when you feel it and you let it go?
Those roses planted are gonna grow.
We made choices but how do we ever know
Which rose is gonna turn out to be rose gold?

(Outro)
Gonna turn out to be, gonna turn out to be
Rose gold.
Gonna turn out to be, gonna turn out to be
Rose gold.

Have you done "Rose gold" as well (or did you only refer to "The wounds we bled")?
Last year, I was only eager to find out "After all this time", which was relatively easy (with the help from others here). After listening to "Rose gold" twice or so, I gave up trying, as I would have much too many gaps and thought, we’d get the lyrics with the album anyway. But unfortunately not. It’s my 3rd favourite song from the new ones, after "After all this time" and "Just kids".
Otherwise I’ll try it again myself, but I’m no native speaker, which makes it more difficult as well.

Oh, I meant having done all the previous albums. I hadn't done any of the new songs before this.

I'm working on Rose Gold right now for you. Gotten almost all of it - just having trouble with a few words in the first verse.

As Bernd posted in another thread, the lyrics are here:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BtRPjW3hAi7/

I did them all before I found that and only missed a couple words.

The Break does remind me a bit of Oyster - a spoken, meditative type part near the end of the song kind of like on Verona. But it's not nearly as long.

Either way, after many listens now, I like the song. Would enjoy hearing live.

I wasn't really calling out anyone here and hadn't followed the promotional stuff too much. Just seemed odd to make the comparison.

I've enjoyed The Wounds We Bleed after a few listens. Kinda have to do the lyrics up myself (though I'm sure others have done all the new songs while I've been away) just out of tradition and to get to know the song. Overall it sounds a lot like recent Heather Nova albums.

Interesting. I just started listening to Thee Way It Feels with the same idea in mind. It's been awhile since I listened to a lot of Heather music.

Big year for my favorite artists. Heather Woods Broderick just came out with her third album, Heather Nova is releasing in July, Mal Blum is releasing in July, and Mary Lambert sometime this fall. So much new music!

Been waiting years for a new album from all of them.

It strikes me as odd there's always a conversation about whether her new album will be like Oyster - at least on the alternating louder albums that follow the quieter ones.

Oyster was made 25 years ago. Why should we expect Heather to make music like she did back then? It was great music but that was a quarter century ago. A song like Sugar or Blue Black would feel pretty out of place on one of her recent albums probably cause she was a very different person and songwriter and musician so long ago.

I think we have a sense of the artist she is today and I expect more music like her recent albums, but probably continuing to evolve, all of which I've enjoyed for what they are and for the songwriter Heather is today.

A song like The Archaeologist or On My Radar would seem out of place on Oyster but that's not a bad thing. They're just different. It's been twenty-five years.

Is there a release date?

Instagram stories are posts on instagram that only lasted like a day and you have to be logged in to see them. I don't have an account so never do, but most things on Instagram are stories these days.

85 euros for a lyric book? Is there something special there or just a very small print run?

I guess this is basically like Pledge but doing it on her own site to avoid overhead, which makes sense.

Mishka played Villain & Saint again in Bethesda last night, the last show on his mini tour.

His cousin, Johnathan Frith opened and also came on stage during the encore to sing a song with him. They sounded good together.

Was just Mishka and a drummer this time. Pretty normal mix of songs in recent years with a couple surprises, including a new song that will be from Mishka's next album it seems.

Tiny venue, as before, and there were maybe 40 people there at most, but some hardcore fans and it was a great vibe. Sound was actually really nice in the venue, especially if you got in the right spot where a lot of people were standing.

Oh! "said" and "have" might be right and would make more sense. I'll give it another listen.

She's been using the river-sea imagery since To Sea from the 1989 First Demos.

Okay, the download is much clearer. The quality really shows in how much easier the lyrics are to understand. Fascinating.

About 90% of the way now. I made a couple laughable mistakes in the last lyrics. Ironically, what I thought was the word "bridges" was actually "kids" and what I thought was the word "kids" was actually "games". This was before we knew the title, ha.

Just Kids (from Jazz Cafe)
by Heather Nova

(Verse 1)
Feels like we're just kids -
No hands, free wheeling
Never knew it could be like this;
So good, so easy

(Verse 2)
Feels like there's no rules -
Bright sun, doors open
No games I'm afraid to lose
Just love unspoken

(Chorus A)
And I like the way you sit
I got no backup plan, it's only you
And I like the way your hand -
No fear for what is true

(Verse 2)
Feels like we're on fire
No rules .... again
Some ancient soul desire
Coming back again

(Chorus B)
And I like the way you sit
I wanna get close to you, feel your heat
And I like the way it feels
Like my heart's a river that's found the sea

(Break A)
And all the years we missed
No matter now, cause we're on track
And every time we kiss
All those years, gonna take them back

(Instrumental Verse)

(Chorus C)
And I like the way you sit
I have no backup plan, it's only you
And I like the way your hands
Don't fear what is true

(Break B)
And all the years we missed
Don't matter now cause we're on track
And every time we kiss
All those years, gonna take them back

(Vocal Outro)

Could be in one of the sections where I couldn't make out the words?

Could be about someone she last knew when they were "just kids?" The song references lost time.

And kids are mentioned in the lyrics, but in the context of not having to worry about losing them.

Tori uses the third person way more than Heather does is what I mean. I didn't literally mean "always". Just, like, often. It seems to me as a Tori noob, anyway. One of my first impressions is how common it is for Tori and rare for Heather.

I'd guess Heather has written less than a dozen songs in the third person, but I'd have to check. They might be about other people, but she either inhabits them with I or talks to them with you.

Glow Stars in the USA, Siren in Europe!

Which makes no sense cause Siren was her most popular album in the U.S., but it'd be easier to tour without a full band on Glow Stars so she could do it here. I also may be biased LOL. I'd love to hear both, though. Hell, I'd love to hear Oyster in person...

This is really incomplete. Some parts I can hear clearly. Others I have no idea. I get a little more each time but if y'all hear things I haven't yet, chime in!

I do like this song. Great to hear a new song with a full band.

Untitled from Jazz Cafe
by Heather Nova

(Verse 1)
Feels like bridges kiss -

Never knew it could be like this
So good, so easy

Yeah, that happened to my friend - his favorite song was played the night before. He said this was one of his top Tori shows anyway, though.

It would be heaven for Heather to change around her setlist from show to show this much and follow her around on tour. She certainly has the catalog of songs to do it. But that's not what works for her, clearly, and not what she prefers. So it is what it is.

Oyster tour is great cause she plays a bunch of rarely or never played songs. Would love more album tours for that reason. Even a Redbird tour cause I'd finally get to hear Overturned live and I'd know exactly when to go for a bathroom break as well, maybe even a few of them (kidding, kidding, mostly....)

As for audience, I expected it to be more like Heather's audience so that was a bit surprising. But I did see someone I've seen at a few Heather shows. I just didn't know as much about Tori's songs and background, though, so the differences make sense.

Also fascinating how Tori is always singing in the third person and Heather almost never does.

I've got most of the lyrics but have struggled with a few places.

But yeah, it seems to be a song about a relationship that's making up for lost time. Like two people who've known (and maybe loved) each other for a long time but never acted on it. A positive love where you don't have to worry about losing your kid, I think she says in the second verse.

(Don't have my notes with me right now but I'll post what I have tonight.)

Afterwards Arnulf says something about a romantic moment as I recall?

LOL

Same.

I actually meant the lyrics reminded me of Drive Away with the new romantic love and driving imagery. Also interesting that this person she mentioned seems to have been someone she knew a long time but couldn't be with till now.

Well the speaker of the song I should say.

This is the setlist of the concert I went to. Loved the encore and the last two songs, Precious Things and Raspberry Swirl. Was foot stomping that last one pretty hard.

Tori is a ridiculously good piano player and singer. Wish I could have understood more of the lyrics but I'll try to dive into her music more.

Also had no idea she had a big queer, patriarchy-smashing fanbase. Felt good and I fit in pretty well except people were shocked I'd never been to a Tori Amos concert before.
