Okay, that makes so much more sense, Estelle!

I'd like to hear Berit's take on Pearl. Part of me wants to travel to Europe again just to hear Berit again since she's not ever going to be on an American tour. Arnulf is amazing too but he does come here.
There's nothing like Berit shredding a good guitar solo on a Heather song and now we have a new song with a long solo! Vincent is really good but I still want to hear Berit's take. I feel she could have a lot of fun with Rewild Me.

I feel like the rise of vinyl is making albums shorter again so they fit in one record. I would guess Rose Gold didn't get included because that would get one song over a single vinyl which would be inefficient. I don't know that for a fact but it's got to be a consideration.

Yeah, I thought of that one, but it's written by her father rather than being about him so i left it out.

Good to know it got to someone in the U.S. I still haven't gotten any update that it's gotten to USPS from DHL so I guess it's on a boat somewhere?

Oh, good catch. I meant to put that in Songs About Other People but forgot.

I have a personal theory that the song is far more autobiographical than it it appears, though.

Cassander - have you received yours yet? I have not. Last update showed DHL handed it off for international transfer on 27-June.

Nope. I'm in the same boat. Still hasn't even gotten to the U.S. yet.

Thankfully I have friends who help me out with stuff like the lyrics booklet.

Rewild me is about herself. Getting back to nature. Also recovering from the divorce. She talks about reading about the rewilding movement of getting back to nature to heal and how that seems so obvious to her.

Over The Fields is about the guy Island is about. She heard he was dying and wrote him a letter to forgive him. Then he wrote back apologizing for everything he had done to her. Scroll up for more details and to read it in her own words.

Just in case there was a language barrier issue, I meant haunting in a good way. A very good way. The last verse of Everytime is amazing. I remember doing research on sea grass and where it grows when the album came out. That would be one of the things I'd want to note if I ever went to Bermuda.

Storm is funny. I expected to put Everytime ahead by just a little and for both to be four and a half like Out In New Mexico.

But I can't find anything wrong with Storm. It's an extremely tight, vivid extended metaphor with perfect singing and guitar. Beautiful folk or folk/rock song. You could say, I guess, the metaphor isn't original enough but the preparation for the tropical storm (I assume) is just so vivid and real. I guess you could say maybe she hits the metaphor over the head too much but the point of the song is how you're living through something that feels like a metaphor and you think about it and feel it - how she thinks about "things that got lost" when making her storm preparations with the shutters and the anchors.

I don't know that it doesn't get a little tired with repetition the way Island and Sugar never do. But I can't really separate it from them either.

It also is the one and only second encore I've ever gotten at a show - in Portland after the first encore, Heather came back to play one final song without Arnulf this time and it was Storm. Portland was her favorite city of the tour and it was a beautiful theater and the crowd was good and it was just magical. Only time she played Storm on the entire tour.

Everytime is a little more interesting musically with that guitar and maybe her singing though I find her singing amazing on both. It's very short and simple. Maybe I could say "yours the thorny crown" doesn't fit in with the rest of it or do a whole lot as a Jesus reference but, eh, the song is still perfect for me.

Also the whistling. That beautiful melody which so perfectly fits the song. The way she captures these vivid images - riding in a car at night has never been done better? I don't quite know what haunts me about the last verse but it just sticks with me. "Where the sea grass grows dark among the stones, you have thrown the line, saved me everytime." Gorgeous.

I cannot find anything not to like about Drink It In either. Maybe a touch less vivid but really, really moving and so quiet and contemplative which fits it perfectly. Love the way it builds. Oddly reminds me a whole lot of Everything Changes.

She capitalizes it so I assumed so?

But I probably should have looked it up.

I wrote a poem called Autumn Leaves when I was 16 or 17. She's probably not referring to that.

Storm *****
Everytime *****

Drink It In ****½

Aquamarine ****
I Wanna Be Your Light ****

One Day In June ***½
Fool For You ***½

All I Need ***
River Of Life ***
You Left Me A Song ***

Let's Not Talk About Love **½

I did this without looking at my old order and weirdly, my current order matches my old order better than what I thought my old order was matches my older order. Down to the very same "Let's Not Talk Above Love" being right on the line. I did not remember that at all! I actually thought it had been River of Life which i liked more than I expected. I also didn't remember Fool For You was my favorite of all the songs that weren't right at the top.

That's really uncanny. I have switched Everytime and Storm but those two have switched places before for me. Great songs.

Funny enough, the four shortest song songs on the album are the top four.

I do love quiet and sad songs. So Storm, The Jasmine Flower, and The Way It Feels are three of my favorite albums. Half the songs are good, half the songs are great, what's not to love?

For Bernd.

Lyrics in the booklet are basically 100% accurate. Just leaves out the outro and the Break (which has no actual words anyway).

And okay, it's a pretty song. I like the chorus.

Vincent
by Heather Nova

(Verse 1)
Vincent, yours is the first name I've ever sung;
Sometimes life is a movie and it's only just begun.

Waves are crashing through my veins, I'm overcome;
Sometimes, life is a movie and it's just begun.

(Chrous)
And the stars will make us wild,
And the dark will make us hesitate, but that's our fate,
The stars will make us wild;
It's not too late for us.

(Verse 2)
I want to laugh, sing Autumn Leaves, and whistle grass with you;
I want to lie under any kind of sky.

(Chorus)

(Break)
Ooo ooo, ooo-oo-ooo
Ooo ooo, ooo-oo-oo

(Verse 3)
Les vagues viennent s'écraser dans mes veines et je m'enivre,
Vincent, je veux only to be with you.

(Chorus)

(Outro)
The stars will make us wild;
It's not too late for us.

Ooo ooo-oo-ooo

It's not too late for us.

That was supposed to be five stars (10/10). That's the top of the scale. My first five star song when going back through, though the distinction is pretty arbitrary. Four and a half and five are all my favorite songs and I can't get tired of them. Four are really great too. Three and a half i really like. Three i enjoy. Two and a half i enjoy when fresh or in the right mood. Two I can find some things to enjoy even if maybe not the whole song. One and a half maybe I don't enjoy much but maybe there's something. One is not really good I don't think. One half is The Way It Feels. I thought I was going to give it one star like He's Spiritual but no. I'm glad some people enjoy it but it's not for me.

I could put a poll up about which is the worst rhyme, iron lungs and separate tongues or higher/desire. Novel but distracting mixed metaphor or tired forced pop rhyme. Both in prominent positions.

At least both tongue and lung are both body parts being used metaphorically but they're both bad metaphors. Sorry. I don't really want to tear this song apart. Imagine if someone did the to one of my poems - I'm sure I've written far worse.

But how did this make in on the album and not When The Music Stops???

For what it's worth on the recent podcast, Heather says she regrets not doing Wicked Game in a more distinct and original way.

Time for some more thread necromancy!

I Miss My Sky ******

Motherland ****

Overturned ***½

The Sun Will Always Rise ***
This Body ***
Redbird ***

Singing You Through **½
Mesmerized **½

Welcome **
Wicked Game **

Done Drifting *½

A Way To Live ½

-----

Did you know Redbird was written closer in time to Oyster than Pearl? It's been almost 15 years since Redbird. Feels like yesterday.

Listening to the album again, my feelings haven't changed a whole lot. My top four are all the same, though I think I enjoy Redbird and This Body a little more now and Wicked game less.

Seriously, though, was this album rushed? Lack of time in the studio? Why bring Welcome back from U.S. South? It works much better acoustic and live, I guess, but really? And why on earth is Wicked Game on this album??? Why did they not do _anything_ differently from the original? It's fine, I guess, but why? She has sooooo many better and more interesting covers.

I'll hand I Miss My Sky five stars and put it in the same category as Island and Sugar. It's really, really, really good and I have always enjoyed it even when she played it every concert. Kinda like Island.

The lyrics and melodies on this album in general, though, just don't meet Heather's normal standards as I see it. I feel like something happened. At least Redbird (the song) has some interesting imagery on it which I appreciate. Also a nice heady musical background even if it's a bit too restful for the subject matter. I always remember hearing the intro to Ruby Red played before it at shows and pretty much all of us are always disappointed it's not actually Ruby Red itself. But I find it an enjoyable song now.

The order of the tracks kinda lines up with Pearl except with two extra ones at the bottom - take out Done Drifting and A Way To Live and they seem comparable for me.

I do kinda wish my feelings about this had changed more than they have but it is what it is.

Will Overturned ever by played live? I understand I'm the world's biggest fan of the song and it's not near the top for anyone else but just once it would be nice to hear it live. Berit plays guitar on the album for crying out loud.

I want to like "Singing You Through". It's pretty. "I'll be there, like a bird, singing you through" is a good line and also really pretty. The rest of the lyrics, though, just don't really seem to work for me. I wish they were more evocative.

Also: how on earth did When The Music Stops get cut from this record???

[Edited to remove stuff about A Way To Live. I don't really need to into that again after all these years. It is what it is.]

Apparently I missed that interview! Thank you, Bernd. Just wanted to know the whole story if she had told it.

What an amazingly brave thing to do to forgive him like that - I can't even imagine, to be honest. I'm glad Heather was able to get a real apology before the end too. Powerful stuff. I quite like Over The Fields - it's been growing on me.

Interesting how the same characters from Oyster and previous work are here in this new album. Throwing Fire At the Sun and See Yourself too.

This is what google translate spits out:

"On Oyster was Iceland, a song about how a much older man abused me, and last year I heard from a mutual friend that he was dying, so I decided to give him some nice words and got the most incredible excuse from him. "

But the beginning and end are in Heather's own words:

"There was a song on Oyster called Island, it was a song about.... ... and I got the most incredible letter back from him which was a full apology."

The English->German->English translation is basically the opposite meaning!

I'm guessing the Break (huya huya) is a Buddhist chant of some sort?

Anyway, yeah, still shamelessly going through these in order of how much I enjoy listening to them. I'm sure I'll get the rest. I do really like your guitar, Vincent, I'll get to the songs about you one of these days.

Love the descending minor chords over "Over the fields you go" - there is so much sorrow there. This feels so much like an old Heather song in the sound, especially the guitar, even though Vincent is new to her music. Hmm.

Over The Fields
by Heather Nova

(Verse 1)
Heard you slipped into the light we cannot see,
Behind the veil and the songs,
Reaching out to those who came to you in dreams -

(Chorus A)
Over the fields you go,
Over the wreckage in slow motion,
Everything that you used to know,
All the weight, all the weight you can let go.

(Verse 2)
And you remember making angels in the snow,
A flash of who you could have been.
Begin the journey you that started long ago -

(Chorus A)

(Break)
Huya huya
Huya huya
Huya huya
Huya huya

Huya huya
Huya huya
Huya huya
Huya huya

(Verse 2)
And all apologies and all the damage done,
Somehow you never found the key;
It's coming to you now as you head into the sun -

(Chorus B/Outro)
Over the fields you go,
Over the wreckage in slow motion,
Over the fields you go,
Over the wreckage in slow motion,
Everything that you used to know,
All the weight, all the weight that you can let go,
All the weight, all the weight you can let go,
All the weight, all the weight,
All the weight.

Oh, I see the "you" in One Day In June is also likely Felix. "Try to be the one you can count on but oh it's a thin disguise".

Similar to The Poison.

Lyrics book doesn't always have all the varitions as sung on the album, which is what I'm transcribing. Refer to Some Things Just Come Undone as well. I think the more rock Heather gets, the more this is true.

In Chorus C, it's very clearly "You are a light" and this is very clearly intentional.

Nothing wrong with the lyrics book as containing the basic lyrics for the song, but it won't cover all the performance variations as seen on the album. I used to get frustrated by this back in the old days but now I just see it as serving a different purpose.

In chorus B, I'm not quite sure if it's "you are light" or "you are a light" as it seems to be in between the other pronunciations where it's clearly one or the other, but I'm not sure it matters a ton. Heather is clearly playing with both in the song.

Oh right, good point about These Walls! I included songs she's talked about a little who it's about or where there's some figure we learn things about if that makes sense?

And yeah, if you want to listen to the full arc of Felix songs, probably songs like Walk This World could be included but I never know who those were really about unless there's some other detail. Maybe they date from before that?

New Love could have gotten tertiary painter mention as maybe that's a a song about recovery, but I don't think it's enough about him to include songs like that on the list.

Note: Heather, if you read this and are uncomfortable with this, please let us know and we'll take it down. I have avoided doing this before but it feels like you've been open recently about how your songs connect to your experiences so I'm going to go ahead and compile this to help myself and other fans look back through your decades of songs in another way, perhaps, and maybe find new connections. But I know these are still just songs and not everything is literal and I am certain I have left things out and gotten other things incorrect. I am trying to stay at a very high level and not trying to invade privacy, sticking to things you've said publicly or themes shared through songs.

I have left out songs that don't have any telling clues even though they address someone, including a lot of love songs. Who knows if they were written about someone in particular or are just songs? So you won't see Just Been Born here or other such songs, no matter how powerful they are. You will see London Rain because the place and context give me enough of a hint that I think I can put it on the Felix list. I also am putting relationship songs that involve long distance or communication issues in the Felix list cause based on connect and themes going through the decades, I see a theme running through them and I have a hunch these are all about that relationship. I am probably wrong about some of them and have missed others but so it goes.

I've listed some songs that are very hard to find and that were released only privately. I can't share these. I'm sorry. Hopefully they will become available again in the future.

If you have feedback on songs you disagree with where I've listed them or that I've left out, please let me know! I actually just through this together on the fly based on stuff I've thought about for a long, long time but I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of stuff, especially B-Sides. I'll do a second draft later.

Some of the Songs About Other Specific People may be about the same people but I'm not going to speculate.

When I list a song with (?) I am saying it's possibly about this person but I am not sure. I feel like Shaking The Doll was said to be about something else but it sure fits with some things but I'll take it out if we're sure it's not the same as The Painter

I am referring to the older, abusive individual that Island and other songs were about as The Painter as a reference to the line in I'm Alive, "your hands were covered in paint." I could also call him Vermonter based on the Vermont Transit Bus, or The American, or whatever, but I'll just go with that since that's what we've called him before.

I could give everyone nicknames but we all know who Felix, Vincent, Mishka, Susannah, and Sebastian are and their names are not hidden.

"The Painter"
Susannah (tertiary)
To Sea
(Guardian Angel?)
(Shaking The Doll?)
Island
Blue Black
Sugar
I'm Alive
Six Years Behind
Over The Fields

To Sea and Guardian Angel sound much more gentle than later songs but there are enough dark themes about escape that I believe they're likely about the same person given when they were recorded. I could be wrong. But To Sea seems to be about leaving America to flee The Painter.

As noted earlier, I included the relationship songs with themes of distance and communication issues here as I see a lot of connection, but I am likely wrong about some of these. Probably there are many others about Felix but I am only including the ones with some connection to those themes or other clues like London. Stay and the songs on The Way It Feels are pretty obvious.

When you click on the "HÖREN" button, you can hear the article, including Heather's own voice and song samples. Be quick! According to Deutschlandfunk, the button expires January 19, 2038, at 4:14am!!! No joke!

Has anyone tried to transcribe Heather's words? It's really really hard to listen to when the translator speaking over her and the article translating all her words into German.

This seems to be the only interview in which Heather tells the story of Over The Fields and I feel like something is getting lost going from English to German and back to English.

I might you to do it if no one else has.

Did you hear how on that podcast the US fan said Higher Ground was his favorite song of all her songs?

I did relisten to the album before I posted this. Was curious if my feelings had changed.
