Really should get myself a ticket for Zita Swoon mid Feb but i think my next gig is Nina Hynes in Dublin if there are tickets left.

She's performing in an art gallery and the audience have to be prepared to be blindfolded. Could be amazing.

I made a compilation tape for a friend years ago. On it was Breathing from Never for Ever album. When it started she thought it was crap, really really crap but her husband was a fan and pointed out the amazing things she can do with her voice and by the end of the song my friend had taken it all back and was appreciative. Not that she ever bought any Kate Bush records but still......

Hounds of Love is one of the all time great albums by anybody in my opinion. Glad to see it loved here too.
...really should go and play some of it and Under the Ivy too while i am at it.

Just saw The Woodsman.

Not sure what to say about it. It's good, i liked it but it's strange and not for our younger viewers.

One of those i will have to reflect on before giving full opinion. A friend of mine saw it and said "i remember it being disturbing at times". I would agree with that. But that is what made it gripping to watch.

Wanna see that Brokebook Mountain but i don't think it's been out here in Rotterdam yet.

Thanks for the info Anke

Knew the album was coming out soon but they don't sell many singles here in the Netherlands so tis only when i stumble across them that i realise they were released.
Will check out Plato this weekend to see if i can find them.

Now listening to :
Mansun - Closed for Business

A fan of Irish Music? and Anke also possibly?
I was at the last Frames gig in paradiso but had to leave before the encore sadly to catch the last train, was gutted. But i do have a copy of the documentary of them from Ned 3 which is brill. Glen's mother is something else.

Don't like some of Damien Rice but when he gets it right it's as good as anything i have heard. The bbc 4 versions of Cold Water and I remember are 2 very very fine examples.

You should check out Tychonaut and Nina Hynes while you are at it.

ah 1994, just having a scan through my collection and i found :

Jeff Buckley, Grace - a masterpiece for most people
dEUS - worst case scenario
Lisa Germano - Geek the girl
Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon
Ben Harper - Welcome to the cruel world
....and of course the rather brilliant Hips and Makers from Kristin Hersh.

i won't mention Dookie by Greenday though

but i could have mentioned:
Stina Nordenstam - and she closed her eyes
pavement - crooked rain crooked rain
pink floyd - the division bell
portishead - dummy
paul weller - wild wood

But i didn't

I don't know why, i was at a birthday party last weekend but nobody sang it and i go to one this weekend but again don't expect it...maybe i needed to hear it.

Me trying to play Kristin Hersh songs pitifully on my guitar. I haven't practiced for ages and i sound so bad. My fingers ache and have had to stop before they hurt too much and i can't do my desk job duties tomorrow

Oooh i like this thread (is that allowed?)

with exception of It's only love and possibly tested i find the rest of south truly disappointing. There are more than 3 crap songs on this album for sure.

she played in London recently as part of 4ad 25 year anniversary. Didn't go but would have loved to.

She will probably be in Germany sometime in the new year with 50 foot wave, you should check her out then. Slightly different to solo gig experience however

Sadly It's true, like you say though it is a gorgeous song. And nearly every gig i have been to someone has asked for it and been denied.

Incidentally as a result of seeing Garden State got into a band called The Shins...who aren't bad at all.

Currently listening to:
Gravenhurst - Fires in distant buildings which is marvellous.

How about :

Kristin Hersh - The Letter (from Hips and Makers), she can't play it anymore cos it makes her cry.

One that makes me well up everytime i hear it is Lullaby by Lamb.

Sad lyric would be David Gray - Gathering Dust. Or even possibly Kent - Stop me june (little ego) perhaps?

Read this post and am trying to think of Artists i really got into in 2005. Like some others on here I am Kloot was a huge discovery for me, blown away by how good they are. Gods and Monsters is album of the year for me, no doubt.

Other bands worth a mention
Rasputina - bought stuff when i was in Seattle last January, truly amazing.

Joseph Arthur - had known the name for years but never done anything about it.

Lisa Germano - For Tomorrowing and Cry Wolf.

Laura Veirs / Emiliana Torrini also worth a mention

The last 2/3 months have had me finally buy some Lisa Germano and find out who she is. First album i got was Geek the Girl which is simply stunning and at record fair i bought Slide for really cheap.

I need more but i don't know which one to get. Any advice anyone?

Got my lonely planet guide already and getting very very excited about going. Sorry, don't mean to tease.

Cocteau Twins - Lullabies to Violaine (all the singles ever released) which is really fab but a tad expensive.

Ben Christophers - Viewfinder

50 foot wave - Free music ep which you can download for free (as Homer Simpson once said "the price is right") at their website and is brill.

Anke, is that Devendra Banhart any good? I keep seeing the name and have seen the album in shops but haven't heard a note of it.

I am a huge fan of Tanya / Belly / Throwing Muses / Kristin Hersh......that whole area.

Have seen Tanya twice live in concert, didn't like her last album so much but the previous 2 solo and all belly can be highly recommended.

Fave Belly song would possibly be John Dark or The Bees.
Fave Tanya : Human

Fave Breeders, anything from Pod i think, didn't enjoy last splash as much as i thought i would.

My God, a Genesis fan. I liked them a lot. Sad they broke up but rumours of possible reunion are doing the rounds on regular basis. That would be a great concert to get to if it happens again (the did it before in 1982).

Hi Anke

No, I am not Dutch but have lived in Rotterdam since summer 2002. Am actually heading to Melbourne in a few months time for a year and don't know if i will come back yet. I do really like it here though so you never know what may happen.

I am learning the lingo still though. It's a very difficult language for us Irish folk, all those sch and g sounds....took me ages to be able to pronounce those with any sense of realism. It's easier to read Dutch i think than say it

Groetjes

Hi everyone

My very first post. Have been a long time lurker of this most excellent Heather Nova site. Have been loving the Advent Calendar of late and this is the place to come for any news on Heather such as Bermuda ep.

One of my best friends lives there so i wrote her an email asking if she could pick me up a copy, not only had she already done it but she had been to a signing session Heather did and got it made out to me. It's not arrived in my postbox yet but tis on the way. Am very excited about it and really chuffed my friend did that for me.

Got into Heather Nova around 95 i think. I was working in Dublin and walking home from work one day when I bumped into an old school mate who happened to be listening to Oyster on his walkman. I had remembered Walk this world from being played on tv and so a few days later i bought the album. The rest is history as they say.

As to my fave Album that would be Oyster of course, followed by Glowstars and then Storm (surprises a few people that i know). My ambitions Heather wise are to finally track down Maybe an angel 4trk single with Heal Live on it and a copy of Supernova.....also a relatively cheap Truth and Bone single would be sweet.

I should stop now so i have something else to say for future posts

James
