I remember one year receiving a card in the post on Valentines Day but upon opening it finding a picture of Rudolph and a Happy Christmas greeting. Still, I did get a card on Valentines

But i replaced it with the Irish version and that's much more special than just saying many happy returns

i am a bit worried i have offended thee unknowingly

a quick search of google presents in my defence this one http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/244300.html
another site said http://www.smh.com.au/news/big-questi ... /08/25/1124562965035.html

while some other site has confused me no end with this http://www.learningcircuits.org/2001/jun2001/elearn.html

i've also heard it meant happy new year originally but since 1800 ish it is taken to mean happy birthday. I understand from my google research that the full phrase is "many happy returns of the day"....

So perhaps i need to withdraw my many happy returns comment and instead go with Lá breithe shona duit...I can't go wrong with this

i'm not so fluent anymore...i learned this Irish lark in the 80's but to be sure to be sure i'll give it a bash

break A
Da mbeadh aithne agam orm fein = If i had recognition of myself
Go gcithfinn fios na sli = ????
Rithinn chughat = I would run to you
Osclaionn doirse eile = doors would open
Mo leine stractha = my torn shirt
Mo chroi aimhreidh = my heart confused
Isteach a theim = inside i go

the ???? one...cith = shower like aodhdubh said. but i wondered if it could be the verb caith that is being used. I would need to hear it. Fios = knowledge and sli = way. Somethings can't be translated directly from Irish to English. For example leathsceal = excuse but literal translation is half-story. But the ???? could be something like "knowledge would be showered on the way" which could be written as "that i might know the way"

hope this little helps

Hi everyone
I want to get a new home cinema / hifi system for my house. At the moment i just have a stand alone stereo and a crappy wappy dvd player (cost me next to nothing)...so i am very much in need of an upgrade.
I was wondering what people here use and if they are happy with what they currently have. What is a good system and how much does the size of the room matter? What sort of specifications should i be looking at when purchasing a new system and what is a good "versterker"? (is the word receiver or amp in English...i don't remember anymore). Do people here recommend buying separate versterker and speakers or getting the all in one sets? And price wise? Can a cheap home cinema all in one package be a good one?

The phrase "double dutch" while being a slang term for gibberish amongst other things the meaning here in The Netherlands is slightly different in that it means 2 guys and a girl. Either i was just not aware of this usage in English language or i am going to be very careful when i want to say "gibberish" in the future

I am temping at a company that is moving to Amsterdam and as a result they have removed most of the desks/chairs on our floor leaving one side of the reception completely empty except for 2 tables. There are only 7 of us left, 4 of us are of the male variety and the 4 of us are the only temps in the place. We have discovered a few weeks ago that the HR girl of this company has a football with the company logo on it. Boys being boys and all we took football and have begun to play matches using the 2 tables as goals. I played one on one against one of the lads yesterday and won 5-3 As the place is closing down there is no work to do, we turn up each morning, drink coffee, look on internet, go for early lunch, come back and play football for a few hours and go home early. And I get to charge this company 50 euros an hour for this. Sadly i've only got another 3 weeks of this before i move on to my next assignment and it sounds like it will be proper work. But for now i am getting fitter by the day and my football skills are improving rapidly. Who says accounting is dull?

I've wanted to like Anouk for a few years now...the shows appear to be entertaining, the music tends to rock...but there's just something about her that makes me not want to hear a single note of anything she does. I have learned to play one of her songs (from Hotel New York album) on guitar and it's pretty enough...but when it comes to parting with cash I just can't do it. Granted she's miles better than Kane

I quite liked the last Harry movie (order of the phoenix). I hated the book to be honest...think it's the weakest of them all...but the movie has Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman amongst others....great stuff.

i started watching Heroes yesterday. My brother persuaded "Santa" that I should see this...I have now seen the first 2 episodes. Tis kinda weird but so far it's ok. I like the Japanese guy, Hiro

I got The Lives of Others as a xmas present but not watched it yet. Also The Science of Sleep....have heard good things about both so am curious.

i hate needles. I've been attending hospital since the day before my 4th birthday. I have had the needle put in wrong on more than one occassion and it hurt. A lot. I was quite young the first time but i never forgot. When i was still young enough to get away with it i would go into hysterics and a big big doctor would have to come and hold me down so they could get the blood sample. Now when i have to go and give blood samples I give my good arm (where the veins are popping out) and look away. I am not brave when it comes to needles...not at all.

Don't agree with you there Johan, dEUS are one of my all time favourite bands and the last 2 zita swoon albums are masterpieces. Everybody should hear A song about A girls...which reminded a friend of mine of Peter Hammill. But it's ok if you don't like it...we all have our personal preferences

I've had the flu since the saturday before new years. Today is the first day since then that I am starting to feel better. Finally eating normally again. Such a relief after almost 2 weeks of shaking with cold one minute to sweating profusely the next. I had no energy to shave either in that time so i started to look like grizzly adams
