Out In New Mexico ****

If I Should Die ****
Ride ****
Looking For The Light ****
Follow Me In Grace ****
Beautiful Storm ****

Maybe Tomorrow ***
Out On A Limb ***
Say Something ***
Hollow ***

Every Soldier Is A Mother's Son ***
Always Christmas ***

I hope Heather does another acoustic album someday. This one was unique and her best since Oyster. Still holds up after all these years.

It's kind of funny, I think I'm about the same age now as Heather was when she wrote this. Hits a little closer to home, maybe.

Every Soldier Is A Mother's Son has aged well. We've been in Afghanistan for 18 years and accomplished what, exactly? Eighteen years! The male focus does sound stranger than ever, though, as there are daughters and other children as well in war. But the song always felt like a throwback to the 60s.

12/12 *** or higher. Every song is really good. Dark and sad and lonely so of course it's one of my favorite albums.

This is close enough to an "Order the tracks" thread since that's what a lot of us did!

Stay ****
Everything Changes ****
Do Something That Scares You ****

The Good Ship "Moon" ***
I'd Rather Be ***
Burning To Love ***
Until The Race Is Run ***
When The Music Stops ***
You're A Rainbow ***

Turn The Compass Round ***
Beautiful Ride ***
Over You ***
I'm Here ***

Precious Thing **
Stop The Fire **

Higher Ground *
Save A Little Piece Of Tomorrow *

He's Spiritual *

Stop the Fire and Precious Thing are right on the cusp of *** and I've gone back and forth on them. Overall, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the bonus tracks listening to them for the first time in awhile and how rocking they are. The bonus tracks remind me of Pearl a bit.

13/18 at *** or higher isn't bad and it easily could be 15/18 depending on which way I'm feeling. A solid album but doesn't consistently hit the same eights as The Way It Feels for me, but wow were there a lot of tracks!

We actually did agree on TWIF, looking back at old threads, except on Sea Glass. 300 Days we had very different perspectives, for sure. I guess we do have a lot in common in terms of how we see music and writing creatively but we've had very different lives if that makes any sense? Probably makes us good collaborators. Sorry I don't know French.

Somehow we only had one big thread for The Way It Feels, not a separate one like this. Well, not too late!

The Archaeologist ****

Sleeping Dogs ****
On My Radar ****
Sea Glass ****
Women's Hands ****
Treehouse ****

Lie Down In The Bed You've Made ***
Serengeti ***

Sea Change ***
I'm Air ***
Moon River Days ***
Earth Is My Heaven ***

Girl on the Mountain **
This Humanness **

-

I might enjoy Lie Down In The Bed You've Made a little more than a couple of the tracks above it, but maybe they're a little more complex and dynamic? Was a little hard to order some of the tracks.

12/14 *** or higher is really good, though. One of my favorite albums. It was nice that this is when Heather came to tour in the U.S.!

I am planning to work backwards and thread necromancy each album with my current feelings about the songs.

Listening to TWIF at the moments and I gotta say I'm glad Heather is so much happier now. Those Felix songs are really sad. Incredibly beautiful but sad. I always like the sad albums the most, though.

The tradition continues!

Gosh, I am almost tempted to ask Gerd for my poll powers back and start doing some tournaments for the recent albums.

Some Things Just Come Undone ****

Rewild Me ***
Over The Fields ***
See Yourself ***

The Wounds We Bled ***

All The Rivers **
After All This Time **
Vincent **

Just Kids **
Your Words **
Don't Worry What The Experts Say **

The album is growing on me. Scale is out of 5, so Sugar or Island or the like would be *****. Don't feel the need to add those, just order the tracks from the ones you like the most to the ones you like least.

The sound quality does get better about half way through or so? It was an interesting interview though not very much about the new album - a lot more about her whole career and about her popularity in the U.S. So probably very interesting for U.S. fans.

Talking about choosing to turn towards Europe after she left her label and went indie and had a child because she needed to prioritize there and she didn't focus on finding a new label in North America when she got dropped was interesting. I appreciate the honesty, actually.

Interesting to hear she is hoping to build up her fanbase in the U.S. and tour more here. I wonder if she'll tour with a band now with Vincent and Arnulf and a drummer maybe? (Geoff?) Probably hard with such small shows as before but we'll see. Would be great to hear Berit's take on the new album and Rewild Me in particular, but from previous conversations, that's not going to be in the cards for a U.S. tour.

My shipment hasn't arrived yet, so this is all based on ear, though I think lyrics have been on her Instagram, etc. So probably there are more official places than this and I probably make some mistakes which I'll fix if pointed out. (I wish very much I could edit posts but that's not allowed on this forum so I'll have to repost them all together later.)

I swore I posted The Wounds We Bled on here before but I don't see them?? I'll try to get them off another computer tomorrow where I did them. I guess I didn't post them cause they were already out there?

Anyway, here are the two songs I liked the most and so was most excited about listening to repeatedly enough to do the lyrics.

Rewild Me
by Heather Nova

(Verse 1)
I'm over the hate and I'm over the gate and I'm gone.
Like a fox in the meadow, no one on my trail, I'm gone.

(Bridge 1)
Rewild my heart, let me be
The sum of my parts, me.

(Verse 2)
Cause I'm over the blame and I'm over the shame and I'm gone.
Like a fox in the meadow, bright flash in the shadows, I'm gone.

(Bridge 2)
Rewild my heart, let me find
My animal part, the divine.

(Break)
And I wanna feel wonder,
And I wanna lie under the big trees,
And I wanna sink into the blue sea;
Rewild me.

(Guitar Solo)

(Verse 3)
In the sweetness of nature, I'm free from the failures, I'm gone.
No slave to the longing, I'm one with belonging, I'm gone.
Gone.
Gone.

Some Things Just Come Undone
by Heather Nova

(Verse 1)
I took my beautiful son down to the ocean,
Some things just come undone, I said,
It's all swirling around in me, like I'm an ocean,
Some things just come undone, I said.

I took my beautiful boy down to the ocean,
Sometimes a change will come, I said,
His cheeks all rosy red and full of elation,
Sometimes a change will come, I said.

(Bridge)
I'm gonna make everythign okay.
(guitar riff)

(Verse 2)
I took my beautiful child down to the ocean,
Look up, up at the sky, I said,
His eyes reflecting light, all full of emotion,
I'm never gonna let you down, I said.

(Bridge)

(Break)
My child, my beautiful son, I said,
Some things just come undone, I said,
Look up, up at the sky, I said,
Two homes better than one, I said.

My boy, my beautiful son, I said,
My boy, my beautiful son,
Should I cry or hold my emotion?
Should I cry or hold my emotion?
Which one is his salvation?
Oh -

Oh, my mother inside,
Oh, my mother inside,
Oh, my mother inside,

I'm gonna make everything okay.

(Outro)
Some things just come undone, I said,
Two homes are better than one, I said,
Oh, my beautiful son, I said,
Some things just come undone, yeah.

Two homes are better than one, I said,
Oh, my beautiful son,
Some things just come undone,
Some things just come undone, I said.

Some things just come undone, yeah,
Oh, my beautiful son,
Some things just come undone,
Some things just come undone,
Some things just come undone.

"Democrats don't have a clear message anymore to attract those that have been social-economically excluded. "

Just to clarify, this is complete and total horseshit. You clearly have been paying no attention to American politics for the last 20 years and did not watch the debate.

Democrats are offering:

Expanded, more affordable healthcare

Expanded, more affordable childcare

Increased immigration which not only is more humane than keeping children in concentration camps, but it has been proven again and again that immigration leads to increased wages for native born workers.

Swift action on Climate change. Recent climate change induced flooding has wreaked havoc on the rural poor. Trump and friends has stripped environmental regulations on this when what is needed is a massive increase of effort before irreversible catastrophe escalates in the coming decades.

An end to Trump's silly tarifs which have been hitting American farmers particular hard and raising the prices of everyday goods.

Increased taxes on the rich to pay for the above which would be a transfer of wealth from the rich (almost all Trump supporters) to the 99%. Trump and the GOP went in the opposite direction and stole money from everyone to give to the rich which is what their rich donors wanted.

Democratic reform to guarantee everyone the right (the GOP has been engaged in the opposite) and to stop gerrymandering which is making most of the country ruled by ever-shrinking minority rule.

All of this was in the debate or in other recent messaging. You can't miss it if you pay any attention. The Democrats have been running on it and implementing it when they were in power.

Indeed, the medicaid expansion was one of the biggest programs to help economically disadvantaged voters in decades.

Maybe you have no idea cause things are so rosy in Europe but here in the USA there is deep poverty side by side with obscene wealth and the Democrats are the ones who have been trying to make progress on giving Americans half the things you Europeans take for granted. They're not perfect but the GOP has instead been focused on tax cuts for the rich and vilifying Muslims, Latin Americans, and making women second class citizens with no control of their bodies.

Just don't even start with that BS.

That's a bunch of victim-blaming bulllshit, Jelger. Go tthe fuck to hell.

Everyone who voted for Trump did so knowing he was a racist and a rapist and they liked him for it. They also are rich evil white people not economically disadvantaged.

Never talk to me again you racist asshole. The people who are disadvantaged are the people of color who are targeted by Trump.

You don't know shit about American politics so shut the fuck up.

Finally had a chance to listen to the album a couple times straight through with focus. Haven't done the lyrics yet, which helps me focus too, but so it is. I also listened to a few songs I liked some extra times.

Overall, the album reminds me a lot of 300 Days. Similar sound. Pearl is more cohesive and has a nice lead guitar "voice" running through it which feels good but I think 300 Days had a little more range.

The two standout tracks for me are Rewild Me and Sometimes Things Just Come Undone.

I love most of Rewild Me, I love the guitar a lot, I love how she sings it. I love some of the lyrics and the way she structures the song with verses that contain repeated lines from earlier in the song then new ones. But some of the lyrics are not too imaginative and evocative, especially the part about the ocean which is odd cause Heather has written ocean imagery better than anyone else I know before.

Sometimes Things Just Come Undone is heartbreaking and so raw and I am just so thankful that a Heather shared it with us.

Okay, so, in general Pearl so far doesn't seem to be one of my favorite albums of Heather's but I want to say something.

I find it striking that Heather is such a private person. She struggles with sharing things from her personal life with the world because she values her privacy. She's talked about this before.

But here we have another very personal, very autobiographical album and she keeps taking risks of sharing this stuff because she knows she writes better songs that way and people relate to it and are moved by it.. She's talked about all this before but it's really striking when you have a song to Sebastian trying to explain her divorce from Felix. I am so thankful she shared this cause it's beautiful and moving but it's also so personal it must have been hard to share. Makes me think of If I Should Die from The Jasmine Flower.

But here we have hundreds of songs now that Heather has written and shared with us about her life and it's such a rich tapestry and I'm so glad we get to experience such intimate, personal, often painful feeling in art.

I also thought of Throwing Fire At the Sun when I listened to See Yourself. They are both sister songs, of course. I had similar thoughts about the song.

Thanks for the translation of the French, Estelle!

Cool to have another cover but nothing will ever top the greatest thank you track of all time, Drive Away. Though I guess that was an apology track for the fake signatures fiasco. I will never forget the feeling of finally being able to listen to the full song clearly and crisply after all those many listens to the bad quality preshow recording.

Do all orders not come with a digital copy of the album? I'm waiting for the physical copy to arrive and got the demos sent to me as well as the thank you song but not the album itself. Wasn't sure if that was correct or not?

One of my absolute favorite musicians nowadays, they have a new album coming out on July 12. Can't wait to see them again on July 20 in DC.

They just released a new single called Salt Flats from the upcoming album, Pity Boy. They've been playing it live for the last couple years but it's good to hear the studio version which is great as well

It's a very different song than Heather Nova's Island but there are parallels too. Both songs are describing abusive relationships and both put a lot of focus on the contrast between being harmful and then seemingly nice. "A kiss, a kick, a kiss, a kick", "he's too scared to hit me now, he brings flowers instead", "you rub salt in my wounds then you lick it away".

Both songs also deal with the difficulty of getting out of such a relationship and also call on geographical metaphors, an island representing a place of solitude and safety and the salt flats representing the unending and seemingly inescapable but toxic nature of such a relationship.

Anyway, I'd say the song is worth a listen. You'll also hear blaring guitars after some of the darkest lyrics which calls to mind Blue Black a bit.

I prefer the newer one with the texture on the background but neither are terribly interesting. Not too concerned about the cover, though.

I'm not an expert, but music theory was my strongest suit back in the day. Mostly because I was so bad at singing and playing music instruments by comparison.

It's been a long time since I wrote or played music. Looks like you don't need to say diminished cause it's a minor scale and that's expected of the 7th.

So I'd say Em11dim9 or Em11flat9.

That should be a real dissonant sound.

Here is the same chord but without the flat 9th, ie with just another e at the top instead of an f. Just one away from your chord.

http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/index.php?ch=E&mm=m11&v=1

Feel free to build songs around whatever sounds right to you.

E A D G B F?

EGB are all part of the E minor chord. D would be there diminished 7th, F the diminished 9, and A the 11th. Eminor11dim7dim9 ???

Oh, roses as a symbol of romance/courtship and rose gold as a symbol of marriage, using a play on words. That makes sense. Didn't know rose gold was that connected to wedding bands but maybe it is these days!

This song sure does remind me of Soon Alaska - both are stocked full of Arctic imagery and both focus on relationships that never came to pass. The poem mentions Alaska as a real place to anchor it, Rose Gold mentions Thunder Bay (a city in Canada).

I like the sound, I like most of the imagery, especially in the verses. The theme of regret, of not knowing. But that metaphor the Chorus is built around sure is odd - what does rose gold have to do with roses? When I think of rose gold, I think of iPhones or trendy jewelry, not flowers. Mixed metaphor and it doesn't seem to call back to the winter/arctic imagery either. Something growing in the cold is good but rose gold??

I enjoy the song and like a lot of the writing and the whole mood of it. But maybe I just don't understand the "rose gold" reference.

Rose Gold
by Heather Nova
(Rotterdam 2018)

(Verse 1)
And the path was unfolding in the charm of my heart that I didn't know,
And the boy was out walking on the street in the falling snow
With a Walkman in his cold hands and the music speaking straight to his soul
In the moment that I felt it, in the shadow of doubt that I let it go.

(Chorus A)
What happens when you feel it but you let it go?
Those roses planted still are gonna grow.
We made choices but how do we ever know
Which rose is gonna turn out to be rose gold?

(Verse 2)
White blanket of nothing for miles till Thunder Bay,
In the [???] looking backwards on the highway -
That's all we have to go on sometimes,
The years we spend crossing the continents of our lives.

(Chorus A)

(Break)
Don't let it, don't let it go,
Don't let it get away from you
When you find some thing that's true.

(Chorus B)
What happens when you feel it and you let it go?
Those roses planted are gonna grow.
We made choices but how do we ever know
Which rose is gonna turn out to be rose gold?

(Outro)
Gonna turn out to be, gonna turn out to be
Rose gold.
Gonna turn out to be, gonna turn out to be
Rose gold.

Have you done "Rose gold" as well (or did you only refer to "The wounds we bled")?
Last year, I was only eager to find out "After all this time", which was relatively easy (with the help from others here). After listening to "Rose gold" twice or so, I gave up trying, as I would have much too many gaps and thought, wed get the lyrics with the album anyway. But unfortunately not. Its my 3rd favourite song from the new ones, after "After all this time" and "Just kids".
Otherwise Ill try it again myself, but Im no native speaker, which makes it more difficult as well.

Oh, I meant having done all the previous albums. I hadn't done any of the new songs before this.

I'm working on Rose Gold right now for you. Gotten almost all of it - just having trouble with a few words in the first verse.

As Bernd posted in another thread, the lyrics are here:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BtRPjW3hAi7/

I did them all before I found that and only missed a couple words.

The Break does remind me a bit of Oyster - a spoken, meditative type part near the end of the song kind of like on Verona. But it's not nearly as long.

Either way, after many listens now, I like the song. Would enjoy hearing live.

I wasn't really calling out anyone here and hadn't followed the promotional stuff too much. Just seemed odd to make the comparison.

I've enjoyed The Wounds We Bleed after a few listens. Kinda have to do the lyrics up myself (though I'm sure others have done all the new songs while I've been away) just out of tradition and to get to know the song. Overall it sounds a lot like recent Heather Nova albums.

Interesting. I just started listening to Thee Way It Feels with the same idea in mind. It's been awhile since I listened to a lot of Heather music.

Big year for my favorite artists. Heather Woods Broderick just came out with her third album, Heather Nova is releasing in July, Mal Blum is releasing in July, and Mary Lambert sometime this fall. So much new music!

Been waiting years for a new album from all of them.

It strikes me as odd there's always a conversation about whether her new album will be like Oyster - at least on the alternating louder albums that follow the quieter ones.

Oyster was made 25 years ago. Why should we expect Heather to make music like she did back then? It was great music but that was a quarter century ago. A song like Sugar or Blue Black would feel pretty out of place on one of her recent albums probably cause she was a very different person and songwriter and musician so long ago.

I think we have a sense of the artist she is today and I expect more music like her recent albums, but probably continuing to evolve, all of which I've enjoyed for what they are and for the songwriter Heather is today.

A song like The Archaeologist or On My Radar would seem out of place on Oyster but that's not a bad thing. They're just different. It's been twenty-five years.

Guess we have to wait a week in North America like Heather says.

(There was never a recording of the Bermuda show, right?)

Is there a release date?

Instagram stories are posts on instagram that only lasted like a day and you have to be logged in to see them. I don't have an account so never do, but most things on Instagram are stories these days.

85 euros for a lyric book? Is there something special there or just a very small print run?

I guess this is basically like Pledge but doing it on her own site to avoid overhead, which makes sense.
